From the Inside Flap
This books is a potpourri of garden lore. Here are summer days of raspberry picking, swarms of bees laden with pollen, peas ripe for podding, herbs for flavouring. Every page, including the text, has been hand painted. Dip into it for recipes, poems, proverbs, and garden thoughts.

It is clear from the outset that this is a book of exceptional quality; the splendid textured dust jacket and delicately illustrated pictures on the cover tease the reader, allowing them a taster of the treat in store for them. The pages contain charming, delicate watercolour paintings with a garden theme. Some pages contain a small image placed in the centre of a page (the size is all that is miniature, the talent is truly unbelievable), others depict incredibly detailed images with textured borders and a magnitude of detail. Incorporated into many of the paintings are sayings and quotes from many literary greats. One such offering, courtesy of Rudyard Kipling, reads ‘God gave men all Earth to love, but since our hearts are small, ordained for each one spot should prove beloved over all.’ All writing in the book is in a calligraphy style, hand-written by the artist.
Not only is the book aesthetically pleasing, it also contains a wealth of useful information, including a table of ‘when to sow, and how to grow various vegetables.’ One of my favourite sections within the book depicts a variety of vintage-style advertisements and advise articles, hand-painted by the artist, with such information as ‘take a quart of honey, as much vinegar and half so much of white wine, boil them together, and wash your teeth therwith now and then.’ Many of the pictures and writings are hugely comic and incredibly entertaining, as well as being easy on the eye.
Other nice touches include the delicate green cloth of the book’s cover, and the dainty silk bookmarker. In and Out of the Garden fully deserves its five stars - I can’t recommend it highly enough.
