The back cover of In and Out of the Garden states that the book was three years in preparation, which surprised me somewhat as it is so imaginative and full of warmth that I would have guessed it to be a lifetime’s work.
It is clear from the outset that this is a book of exceptional quality; the splendid textured dust jacket and delicately illustrated pictures on the cover tease the reader, allowing them a taster of the treat in store for them. The pages contain charming, delicate watercolour paintings with a garden theme. Some pages contain a small image placed in the centre of a page (the size is all that is miniature, the talent is truly unbelievable), others depict incredibly detailed images with textured borders and a magnitude of detail. Incorporated into many of the paintings are sayings and quotes from many literary greats. One such offering, courtesy of Rudyard Kipling, reads ‘God gave men all Earth to love, but since our hearts are small, ordained for each one spot should prove beloved over all.’ All writing in the book is in a calligraphy style, hand-written by the artist.
Not only is the book aesthetically pleasing, it also contains a wealth of useful information, including a table of ‘when to sow, and how to grow various vegetables.’ One of my favourite sections within the book depicts a variety of vintage-style advertisements and advise articles, hand-painted by the artist, with such information as ‘take a quart of honey, as much vinegar and half so much of white wine, boil them together, and wash your teeth therwith now and then.’ Many of the pictures and writings are hugely comic and incredibly entertaining, as well as being easy on the eye.
Other nice touches include the delicate green cloth of the book’s cover, and the dainty silk bookmarker. In and Out of the Garden fully deserves its five stars - I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Hurray for the re-issue of this beautiful book! Paging through this hand-painted, calligraphied book any day of the year is like an escape into the Garden of Paradise! Hundreds of small, engaging watercolors of the garden and whimsical little garden people, harmonized with beautiful calligraphy. Besides being filled with the author/illustrator's charming observations, it is a veritable treasure trove of garden lore, with many quotes from authors old and new and advice from classic, old treatises on gardening and horticulture. Also many enchanting, anonymous garden sayings and quaint herbal folk remedies. The history of fruits and vegetables as a part of our culture. I bought two copies of this book--one to just periodically carry around with me! It's one of my favorite gift books, too. You won't be able to stop dreaming over it. You'll adore it!

I've gone through this book again and again. I think whoever like calligraphy, water color painting and gardening would love this book. Although it's quite difficult to concentrate on the attennuated of water color written content. But it strongly inspires me to grasp by brushes and calligrpahy pens again. It becomes one of my possessive books and always added in my bag wherever I go since then.

Book itself looks lovely, beautiful illustrations. Unfortunately there were marks on the cover, despite sending two previous books back for the same reason - clearly Amazon don't pay any attention to the reason you are returning an item.

What a shame this book has been printed in A5 format. The pictures and writing are so small you can't make out the details and it's really tricky to read because the tiny words have been written in pale coloured ink. This would have been a fantastic book if it had been printed at double the size so you had a chance of making out some of the details in the paintings.
