"Charming, character-driven fantasy with an elegant design and masterful story-telling in the tradition of Walt Kelly, Charles Schulz and Carl Barks." -- PW
"Like Pogo, BONE has whimsy best appreciated by adults, yet kids can enjoy it, too; and like Barks' Disney Duck stories, BONE moves from brash humor to gripping adventure in a single panel." -- ALA Booklist
"Bone has the multi-level writing and artwork of the best Chuck Jones cartoons or early Disney movies. It's overflowing with subtext about conflicting philosophies of power, cultural imperialism and political responsibility - though not enough to get in the way of its silly fun." - CMJ New Music Monthly
"One of the best kid's comics ever." - Vibe Magazine
..".Sprawling, mythic comic is spectacular." - Spin Magazine
" I love BONE! BONE is great!" - Matt Groening
"Jeff Smith can pace a joke better than almost anyone in comics; his dialogue is delightful -- so are all his people, not to mention his animals, his villains, and even his bugs." -- Neil Gaiman

Intrigued as I don't read many graphic novels. And I know nothing about them. These are my thoughts as an adult library assistant who reads children's books.
I didn't find it particularly entertaining. It wasn't funny, I didn't like the characters. I'm not interested in reading further as it's not a genre I really like, but I did quite like the style of drawing and the look of the Bones. This might be one book that you need to read at the right age to appreciate.
Sorry if you're a fan - but we all like different things. I'll still recommend this to young readers in my library, and I see readers enjoying them.
Even though I'm a guy of a certain age (probably too old to be reading comic books, that's for sure!) I absolutely loved this book. Unlike a lot of graphic novels there are no super heroes, it's not dark and it's not set in some grotty city. This is much more Walt Disney than Frank Miller and make no mistake. However, don't let that lull you into a false sense of security. The characters are well defined and endearing, the plot is wacky and captivating and the comedy...I actually laughed out loud on several occasions. This is the start of an epic that will have you gripped until the end.
So, if you're a fan of fantasy but want to try something a little different then this is definitely what you're after. Buy it now!
We follow Fony Bone, his cousins, and the friends he makes along the way as they try and get out of the strange land they have become lost in. All sorts of different creatures pop up and join in from dragons to tiny bugs. If you crossed the Wizard of OZ with the Dungeons and Dragons animated series you get an idea of the type of story being told.
The art is great, being purely black and white line drawings reminiscent of Usagi Yojimbo. It has the feel of a golden age animated short. The Bone characters are anthropomorphic with blobby bodies, big noses and quirky eyes but capable of great exaggerated expressions. It is quite a shock when traditional human figures are introduced. A lot of the story is told visually and a great deal of emotion is imparted by these clay-like figures. The lettering is also suitably bombastic too.
The tale is simple enough with no forced complexity or unnecessary convolutions. It has a straightforward timeline and wont tax you as a reader. What it has by the bucket load is charm. As soon as you meet this cast you care about them. You are drawn to them and the pages fly by as you can't stop wanting to know more.
The perfect Thumbs Up!
Maybe I'm older than the target audiance. If you're thinking about buying this for a kid then go for it, what could go wrong?
But, like I said, the plot is intriguing but it didn't give me enough to say that my appetite have been wet for more. I guess this is a spoiler (unless you've looked at the title of the next volume) but the whole thing is about a 30 minute read and you're left with the certain knowledge that the next spectacular event that might take place is a race of cows. I know there's likely to be more than that, but without more information who gives a toss?
It's kinda cheap so I might just order it with the next expensive item I buy, since I'll probably go for the free delivery.
Basically I *would* like to read more but I don't think I would go to any great pains to do so.

My boys love this series. Good mix of fun and adventure. Slightly scary, but not too much for my children, and they love the charactersPublished 3 months ago by Mary-Margaret Lhuilier
Funny and engaging, great for reluctant readers, particularly boys. The 12 year olds in my class loved it.Published 7 months ago by Amazon Customer
