Product Description

Joel McNeely & the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's version of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa mixes the film's musical pieces with Celtic, classical, and pop favorites. Pieces such as Mozart's "Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A major, K622 (adagio)," "Dear Old Ireland," and "The Ghost of Molly McGuire" blend well with Barry's lush, sweeping compositions. A best seller for several decades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of John Barry's movie scores 29 Oct. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Out of Africa is the finest and most memorable of Barry's scores, wonderfully unusual, not like other soundtracks that are takeoffs on famous or obscure classical music. Delicate and bold, it is the perfect companion to the film, but even if you haven't seen the film, this soundtrack can be captivating. The beauty of the music can only be rivaled by the natural beauty of the African continent. This is a more complete version of the original soundtrack album, including a number of themes that were not on the original. The original, however, seemed livelier, while this version, since it is 20-bit digital, has a purer, more lyrical and even lonely sound. If you are a fan of the film or it's soundtrack, it is worth having both versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not like the original 1 Nov. 2001
By Dimitris Rakopoulos - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The idea of listening a new recording of John Barry's memorable Out of Africa is to say the least interesting. So, I prefered to listen to the new recording without listening the original one before. Just to see the difference. Well, even from the first track you can see the difference and you miss instatly the original recording. It is not a bad album. Not at all, but it lacks the smoothness and the feeling of the original album. The sound seems more "metalic" and lacks the passion of the original. Still it's a way to appreciate once more the fantastic work of John Barry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seven Minutes Makes Little Difference 28 Mar. 2005
By Marty From SF - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"Out Of Africa" was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Sound and Original Score. This recording by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is nearly identical to the 12 song `official' soundtrack. However, there is an additional seven minutes of music, including the complete Adagio from the Mozart clarinet concerto and some miscellaneous traditional music that was omitted from the film. The sweeping drama is still here and I see little difference between the Original and this recording other than seven minutes. It's a toss-up, but each one will not disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but something is missing.... 4 Nov. 2003
By S. Chhem - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The tracks to this album is absolutely wonderful, and although I have not bought the original album yet, I am familiar with the main theme. This album is not bad, but something is missing...I agree with the other reviews that it does kind of lack that intimate feeling when compared to the original soundtrack...maybe it's due to some of the track being so short! (48 seconds)

2.0 out of 5 stars Agree. Not as good as the original. 1 May 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Every soundtrack sounds like the previous one because of slow, ponderous, heavy, sterile, dry interpretation of the themes. One just expects some brightness in the playing but this is never delivered. This recording "tries" to have a story. Stick to the original soundtrack. 1000 times more enjoyable.
