Serious in subject, very funny in delivery. It’s a style that makes Higgs reminiscent of great British comic writers, Douglas Adams being an obvious comparison, but with the added gravitas of solid research and acute historical insight.

In Our Pet Queen he delves deep into the concept of symbolic heads of state, the class structures that support them, and the way their symbiotic interdependence with their host nations has evolved culturally. Never losing sight of the utter ridiculousness of the whole thing. A lesser writer might have attacked this subject with cynicism, instead Higgs comes at it with a giddy, exuberant, kind-hearted glee - delighting in the wonder and the weirdness of it all.

Loved it.

Entertaining perspective on the role of the monarchy and why it might be a good thing despite its apparent undesirability. I'd love to see a fuller, more worked through, tome which examined the ideas critically and in more depth. Perhaps Russell Brand might take on the task.

As a citizen not subject of the UK I have my own personal opinion of the monarchy. This pamphlet provides a biased and hysterical viewpoint which is as irrelevant as the class war concepts it seems mired in.

An interesting take of the monarchy that brings in history, rationality and a small dose of magical thinking- it's both fascinating and enjoyable, and always eminently readable.
