A drily humorous book, the Incident tells the story of a group of schoolchildren in a post-war English town who decided to deal with a gang of criminals on their own, reasoning that adults would just muck up the proceedings. The writer, C. Day Lewis, has an elegant and understated way with words, which is understandable, seeing that he was a professor of poetry at Oxford.
In this era of ebooks, The Otterbury Incident is a book that should be owned in hard copy. Your children will enjoy it and adults, if not too thick-witted, will enjoy it as well. Edward Ardizzone's illustrations are a lovely addition with their spare, black ink expressiveness.
By the way, this easily deserves five stars. If you are concerned about the fact that my reviews are generally only four or five stars, thinking me too much of a pushover, think again. I like very few of the books that I encounter. I do not review those, choosing only to review standouts.
