I was originally recommended by friend to have a look at Otter Box defender. Although yes it does offer the uttermost protection for your phone, aesthetically it makes it look like a brick and if anyone tried to rob you of your iPhone you could probably defend yourself with it. So I decided to have a look at the Commuter TL.
There's not much difference between the Commuter and the TL version except the Commuter offers side protection but none for the apple logo on the back. Whereas the TL covers the logo with the see through window which appealed to me. The rubberised/silicon cover provides a snug (but not too snug so you can't put it on) fit. The clear plastic back then secures it further, preventing your phone from sliding inside the case so if anything were to get in the back, it wouldn't scratch. The rubber/silicon jacket feels smooth but still provides the grip that you need. My phone feels protected without looking like it's been encased in brick. What's more I like the fact it protects all your ports. It's a little deceptive on the picture but actually covers the chrome bezel around the iPhone protecting it from scuffs and knocks.
All in all it's a good case, doesn't look too bulky but doesn't compromise protection. For all the people who like to dress their phones in pretty cases I probably wouldn't recommend it as it's more functional than it is pretty. I gave up on pretty cases, as although it looks great, it doesn't always protect your phone. In fact it was my pretty case that ended up scratching my precious previously scratch free iPhone.
If you work in a tough environment, outdoors or someone who does a lot of outdoor activities you might want the defender. If you want a functional everyday case then the TL is perfect.

Excellent case for the iPhone 3G/3GS. An excellent combonation of a rubberised protective skin along with a hard shell which clamps around it. Perfect fit for my iPhone and makes it a lot less bulky than many other cases I've seen. I'd defnitely reccomend this item.

Like any phone case, the Otterbox Commuter faces a challenge. The challenge comes in the trade-off between not adding bulk and weight to the phone and the addition of protection. Needless to say the Otterbox Commuter takes this to near perfection. The case is still relatively slimline, with a clear plastic rear and rubberised sides which still make it nice to hold. As with the majority of the Otterbox range, this appears to offer excellent protection and while I'm not keen to drop my iPhone on a concrete floor to find out, I'm pretty sure it would survive most my life would throw at it.

So does it meet the challenge? Yes, in a stylish and elegant way. But why not five stars? I still feel there is more to be done with the materials and the fit, it could appear cheap in parts and the fit isn't a snug as it could be. Call me a perfectionist but I want the protection to be there and barely noticeable while I still find myself removing this at times and feeling the difference in my hand. Overall however, if you want a case - it's one of the best I've seen.

Still using this so it must work (which means I need a new phone). Keeps dirt out but not sure about drop protection as I try not to bounce my phone. I tend to think all of these add-on gadgets are too expensive though.

Love otterbox products but NOT there support a complete waste of space.... this saved my iphone 3GS being binned as it got dropped into a sink full of washing up water, yea yea yea ok so it come out cleaner than it went in, but thankfully the internals stayed dry, wacked it into a bowl of rice placed in airing cupboard for two days took it out it carried on working, thanks to the various plugs that this cover has.... highly recommend.

In short - an excellent low profile case which gives me assurance that the phone is well protected. I was hoping the cover would be slim enough to allow it be kept on when fitted into my TomTom cradle in the car, but unfortunately it's just too big (but not a criticism of the case - your mileage with other cradles may be better). Read on for more detail...

-------------
I wanted a smaller/lower profile case for my iPhone 3GS to use alongside my other one (Luxury Black Leather Premium Flip Case for Apple iPhone 3G 3GS, which is excellent by the way, especially for the protection it gives, but it bulks out the phone alot).

The Otterbox Commuter TL comes in three bits, a rubber flexible jacket that fits over the back and sides of the phone, a plastic re-enforcing cover that goves over the top of the jacket, griping top to bottom and covering the back, and a clear self-adhesive screen protector for the front.

Rubber flaps cover the earphone and USB connectors very securely; the on/off button and volume buttons are covered completely, with raised bumps on the jacket to indicate where these buttons are (which work fine with the cover over the top). The ringer silencer is the only button which remains exposed with the case on.

I found the adhesive screen protector a bit fiddly to put on, and gave up in the end - I wasn't happy with the first attempt so took it off and tried again (only to find second time round it didn't adhere properly). Will probably have another go at some point (no doubt more to do with me having two left thumbs).
