a really great volume of Brin's work. Surprising and startling pieces, with the brilliant "Detritus affected" and excellent "piecework" as major highlights. Very highly recommended for the human tone of the writing as well as the narrative and sheer quality of prose. Excellent stuff.

Otherness is the uniting theme for the short stories and essays collected in this book. Don't let the silly cheap science fiction cover fool you: there's some pretty deep thought inside the covers. The short stories vary from great to ok, but the essays offer the best value in the collection. Brin writes about UFOs, science versus magic and what he calls the dogma of otherness. It's all very interesting and enlightening.

The short stories aren't a waste of space, either - the best of them are captivating and contain marvellous ideas. Brin writes good science fiction, especially if you value interesting ideas. Those looking for fresh thought to chew on will find a nice dose from this collection.

I really enjoyed this book - the Giving Plaque & Sshhh... especially are thought prokoving & well-written stories. Brin also has several essays on various topics inserted throughout the book that are very entertaining. His style is eloquent & easy to read. I would definitely recommend this collection to any SF fan...

The short story developed to a an art. Probably tagged Science Fiction, but more of a melange of Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology in a fiou pastry of tongue in cheek humour. The title story defines western 'civilisation'. Beg or borrow, and if necessary buy it, read it, recomend it.

This is a very boring collection of short stories by the master of SF. I would only expect ardent fans of David Brin to purchase this book.
