So what's the bad news? The bad news is that the video to DVD transfer of the plays has been handled with what appears to be precious little in the way of either care or attention. This means that the picture quality is mediocre (at best) and poor where it most needs to be sharp - on The Importance of Being Earnest. I have seen BBC productions, on DVD, of both this vintage and earlier which have had a much better picture quality than you get in this package. And so it loses a star for that.
The productions themselves (from the 1970s and 80s) are in the straightforward, old-school BBC style. Completely studio-bound, with sets, they (almost) look and feel like filmed plays. And that, one suspects, is the intention.Read more ›
I think the the Picture Of Dorian Gray is perhaps the weakest but still worthy of more than one view.
I really bought this set to compare The Importance Of Being Ernest with the 1952 Michael Redgrave version. Both versions stand up in there own right. Well worth getting.
Lady Windermere's Fan it certainly worth watching many times.
If you like Oscar wilde's writing you'll enjoy this set.
This marvelous collection brings together four of his best-known works in productions from the BBC's long-running "Play of the Month" series, starring an array of Britain's finest actors; plus a biography with contributions by, inter alia, renowned scholar Isobel Murray, Wilde's grandson Merlin Holland and "Bosie's" great-grandniece Lady Alice Douglas, as well as many well-chosen excerpts from Wilde's works and the trial transcripts, visits to the locations of his life's key stations, and a wealth of photographs.Read more ›
This collection is particularly valuable for the 1-hour feature film The Life and Loves of Oscar Wilde, which is beautifully done. I was very moved by it.
I have seen many Wilde plays on stage as well as film and TV adaptations. This collection has stood the test of time and should be in every collector's library. The price is ridiculously low for four Wilde plays plus the extra feature film. Highly recommended.

Some terrific performances of very witty dialogue. Nice to see stars now long dead such as Jeremy Brett and Keith Michell. Informative documentary as extra.Published 3 months ago by Richard68
