I slept on a very squishy mattress for years, it was pretty thin and had a built-in memory foam topper. Quite recently I had occasion to spend the night in an independent hotel. In the hotel, I discovered that the mattress was really hard. I was worried about this, I thought it would make my back worse, but as it was late and there was no other option, I begrudgingly went to sleep.
The next day I woke up and to my amazement, I had no pain in my back at all.
This gave me the incentive to do a bit of research.
I discovered that sleeping on a firm surface can be very good for people with back pain. The stiffness gives support, and essentially holds your spine in place, instead of constantly moving around on a soft mattress.
Anyway, after spending the night in that little hotel I asked the manager where he got his mattress. He gave me the link to this item, which I placed an order for the next day.
Without a doubt, the most comfortable, sturdy, supportive mattress I have ever slept on. It could be twice the price and it would still be a bargain.
Of course, this is an orthopaedic mattress. Yes it gives your back proper support and can prevent problems with back pain etc. But damn is it harder than I thought it would be. I think a lot of this is perhaps down to my weight; i'm not a very heavy person, under/around 12-13 stone, so personally I wouldn't recommend this to anyone around that weight as even if you have back problems, this may still be uncomfortable. HOWEVER, it is well put together and, given the right weight, would actually support you quite well. Regardless of my own personal mistake it is still a decent mattress and could possibly save you a lot of money in comparison to more mainstream brands. There are no gaps, scrapes, loose threads, cuts or anything untoward about it, there is no funny manufactured smell like you get with some mattresses and in all it is pretty good.
Again, if you're light I would avoid this, but for the heavier among us this may be just fine.
Please do not waste your money. If you are looking for a budget mattress, keep looking.
This company are rude, patronising and will tell you that it doesn't matter how they describe the product, a mattress purchase online is all personal taste and as such, the customer's problem.
Happy Beds advertise this on their website too, as Super-Firm. But Medium-Firm on Amazon. If you order this and don't like it, you are basically stuck with it. It is Incredibly big and heavy and they charge you a £60 fine to remove. Even if you want to buy something else from them instead.
Happy Beds are very friendly before purchase, but afterward they actively refuse to help/deny all responsibility.
This mattress has pretty much wrecked my life! Until I can afford to get it replaced. And that may take some time....
I'm 6'4" and 18 stone and i can say this mattress is very firm.
I had previously been sleeping on a pocket spring / foam mattress which was adverted as firm but turned out to be as firm as a sponge when i was lying on it; that might sound funny but it did lead to back pain.
Clean and well packaged, delivery firm Yihani Logistics were spot on too.
I rang Happy Beds to ask for help and the guy was lovely, very concerned and apologetic. He advised that it does say that beds are only delivered 'to the door' but he rang Tuffnells to ask if the driver would consider coming back to help me.
Unfortunately, he didn't want to, even going so far as to say the reason was because there were children's pushchairs and toys all over the place. I found this pretty bad service on Tuffnells part, especially as I don't have any kids or pets etc that could explain his blatant lie! I had made sure that the double sized front door was opened fully, and that the entire hallway way clear, all the way to my bedroom. The driver said he'd never delivered a bed before, just parcels, and it was clear he wasn't happy to be doing it on this occasion.
The Happy Beds guy was lovely, and even said he'd do it himself, except for the fact he lived in Yorkshire, whilst I'm in Hertfordshire!
In the end, a relative came round after work, 5 hours later, and got it inside for me.
I would buy from the company as the bed is great, but I would expressly ask for any courier EXCEPT Tuffnells!
However there were major issues with the delivery (Yahyanu Logisitics). I received a message stating that I would be contacted with a date and 4 hour delivery slot. This didn’t happen and they tried to deliver it to my neighbour. The item is very big and heavy and the driver was very offhand with my neighbour who’s just had a baby. I’m cross that this happened and so inconvenienced my neighbour.
It’s a shame that such a good company selling such a good product has been let down by its contracted delivery firm.
