The first and still the best gardening book I ever bought (I now have extensive library). An absolute bible for all those wishing to grow their own fruit and veg in a normal back garden. Geoff's approach is to mix the decorative and the edible together in borders - a nice break from the usual design fascists! It should appeal to all levels of gardening expertise from beginner to experienced.

He talks you through everything from garden history, design and practicalities to advice on cultivation and care of flowers, fruit and veg. Great practical projects (cold frames, pergolas, arbours etc) and wonderful month-by-month checklists. Also sections on different flowers, shrubs and veg which are tried, tested and decorative.

A must! Got me into BBC Gardener of the Year final anyhow!

I saw this book in my local library just as I am starting a vegetable garden and Geoff Hamilton was always a favourite of mine on Gardener's World. Now it's on my Christmas list of must-have books. Having read many over the years I'm not often persuaded that I need any more gardening tomes but this is a must. It starts out focussed entirely on kitchen gardens, firstly with a little background and history and then, gradually, Hamilton introduces us to his philosophy of melding vegetables and herbs with the plants in the garden for a holistic approach that allows everyone who wants to to have a go, no matter what size of garden you have. Some ideas are only practical in a larger space it's true, but Hamilton never presumes to know his reader's circumstances and always offers alternatives.

Not surprisingly, given his wealth of knowledge, this book does eventually embrace the whole gardening experience but his simple, well-reasoned, common-sense approach to fruit and veg makes this a book I will keep referring back to. Whether discussing companion planting, how to ensure your veg plot looks as goods as the rest of the garden or just planning to have somewhere to sit and enjoy it all, this book is packed so full of information you will read it again and again. Plenty of how-to sections, pictures galore, a good index and Hamilton always explains why he recommends something, never just telling the reader it has to be this or that. Great communication.

Top stuff.

This book, which accompanies the TV series of the same name and is available in a DVD collection, is by Geoff Hamilton. Although it's over 20 years since he sadly died, he still remains the outstanding presenter of BBC's Gardeners' World. He had the magic touch that made everything both watchable and informative. This is well reflected in this book. Within its pages, you'll find everything you need to know about combining fruit and veg in a colourful garden that most people will surely love.

As a young woman in her early 20's I discovered BBC Gardeners World one day, flicking over programmes to watch.

What an ACE at his profession... I only briefly ever owned a garden and enjoyed for the one year I had it immensely. I learned a lot from this gardener and have to this day never found anyone as good.

I learned a lot from his teachings and his experience. The style in which the programme was offered too was unique, its not the same... too glossy and not as informative, its like the many Cookery programmes too much of the presenters face and not enough camera on the actual item or method, its assumed that everyone knows how to garden... well I'm sure folk who don't have a garden and rarely have the opportunity to do some small scale planting etc would prefer a simpler method on TV.

For anyone who hasn't a clue about gardening and is interested... I would recommend any or every single of Geoff's Books without even seeing one. Truly, you wont be disappointed.

Ive been scanning the web for a book on a programme he made on the BBC Gardeners World where he used Herbs and Vegetables to control pests, it consisted of some teams who tried to work out what would go with what what, using a natural way of controlling pests and encouraging good pests without using chemicals... what a fantastic programme that was, very useful indeed, just wish I could remember when it was made!

This has been my favourite gardening book for many years and in fact this purchase is not the first copy I have owned. It is a practical guide that incorporates everything you might need to know about having an attractive kitchen garden, even if you are a novice gardener.

I have owned this book since publication. Now I have bought one for my son - a new gardener - he is thrilled with it, and has already built a compost bin using Geoff's instructions! A classic!
