Product description

From the Back Cover

Animal alphabets, architectural lettering, exquisite florid expressions, the well known, the whimsical, and the inspired have been brought together in this fascinating, practical, and inexpensive pictorial archive sourcebook by graphic designer and artist Carol Belanger Grafton.
Here is an exquisite collection of unique and evocative lettering dating from an eleventh-century Anglo-Celtic alphabet right up to the present. This new and highly useable material--much of it available nowhere else--is drawn in line with creative precision and is easily transferable for artistic work of all kinds.
The volume contains 1,685 bizarre and ornamental letters (no duplication with any other Dover book), including 50 full alphabets in a variety of motifs that include animals, military, landscapes, silhouettes, religion, mathematics, architecture, and much, much more.
The royalty-free alphabets offer artists, designers, and crafters an indispensable tool for any project requiring imaginative lettering.
Dover (1981) original publication.

I am a signwriter artist who was looking for unusal old type styles specifically to do with ornamental & circus lettering. The book was, as advertised, Bizzarre & Ornamental Alphabets but pages upon pages dedicated to single type faces made the book not what I required, there were only 50 type faces, most of which were too specialised to be ever used. I decided to keep the book 'just in case' I neede something VERY specialised. At the same time I also purchased a book on Circus Alphabets which was exactly what I wanted. It is a pity that somehow the customer cannot get a peep inside the book before one buys it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful graphic tool for craftspeople 28 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Although the content of this book overlaps other collections by Carol Belanger Grafton, it displays a wide variety of motifs and typography from the Renaissance to the Victorian era. Professionals may be dismayed that some of the more ornate alphabets are incomplete, and that for unexplained reasons, the letter "j" hardly ever shows up. A beautiful and intricate alphabet of letters designed to look like building blueprints is only complete for the letter "A". The end of the book is filled with other alphabets which are banal compared to what the cover seems to offer. Still, like most books compiled by Grafton, this one offers a wide and useful choice of good quality intricate line drawings. If this info were available on CD, like other Dover publications, it would make life that much easier.
