I suppose it should be obvious from who it is this book is covering, but just to warn any potential buyers, this is all pretty hard! Saying that the transcriptions seem great and I'm pretty close to getting Big Chief down in line with Professor Longhair's recordings.

Good stuff, some is not at all easy by any stretch, but pretty realistic transcriptions (how on earth do they manage to commit Gonzo to dots in print?)and fun to play.

HASH(0x9575a210) out of 5 stars Good Quality Publication 23 May 2012
By Sean Scanlen - Published on Amazon.com
I happened recently to hear a selection of music from New Orleans, and decided that I would like to learn to play in that style. This book presents transcriptions from a number of pianists. The included discography allows one to find the exact performances that have been transcribed, which assists in learning to imitate that style. Many (if not all) seem to be on iTunes.

The transcriptions are of high quality, to point that they would be suitable for referencing in an academic publication. As I am particularly fond of Professor Longhair's songs, I have listened to the two versions of 'Tipitina' that are included in the book, and also to 'Willie Fugal's Blues'. Differences between transcription and performance are minor.

It must be said that many of these pieces are not easy, though given that they are note-for-note records of the performances of some of the best blues pianists, that much should be expected. This book is a fine text for students, scholars, and those who are otherwise interested in learning something of the New Orleans piano repertory.

HASH(0x9575a288) out of 5 stars Find the music. Slow it down. Loop it. Practice it. Master it. 11 Feb. 2013

This book starts with the historical background of each of the great piano legends. It does not have a CD, or MIDI files, which is a shame at this price. To get the best use out of this book, one should be able to hear these songs. Having the ability to slow down a song would be helpful. I purchased a "Tascam CD-VT2 portable CD voice and music trainer", and a "Boogie Woogie 10 CD set". I will listen to the missing individual songs on youtube. All that's left for me to do now is to slow down the music, loop it, practice, practice, practice, and... master it. I need the eartraining, you see. ;-)

HASH(0x8f44f1e0) out of 5 stars You will love this collection! 9 Mar. 2013

You will play these pieces over and over until you’ve memorized them. They will sing you to sleep and wake you up. James Booker’s pieces, Gonzo’s Blue Dream, Tico Tico and Pop’s Dilemma are so beautiful they hurt. And Professor Longhair’s Big Chief is transcribed so well that you can hear him playing it. All the transcriptions are at an intermediate keyboardist’s level and can serve as a basis for further improvisation for more advanced players. If Big Chief isn’t enough for you, there’s also the Fess’s Tipitina, Doin It and Willie Fugal’s Blues to keep you humming his tunes all day long. Informative biographical sketches of these musicians as well as the others represented in “New Orleans Piano Legends” (Fats Domino, Dr. John, Jelly Roll Morton and Tuts Washington) make this collection approach perfection.
HASH(0x9575a810) out of 5 stars Really great book of accurate piano sheet music from New Orleans ... 22 Dec. 2015

Really great book of accurate piano sheet music from New Orleans legends. The music itself is very challenging, but the note for note transcriptions was very helpful. I played a concert in New Orleans and was able to use the sheet music for Tico Tico, which I couldn't find anywhere else.
