About the Artist

In summer 2014, the world's most revered monster is reborn when the epic action adventure Godzilla is released. From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless. Film composer Alexandre Desplat was hired to compose an original soundtrack for Godzilla. Desplat had not composed previously for a monster film, having worked on movies such as The King's Speech, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and the final two Harry Potter films. Desplat accepted the contract after being impressed with Edwards' Monsters. Desplat describes the soundtrack for Godzilla as 'non-stop fortissimo, with lots of brass, Japanese drums and electric violin'. The score is also conducted by Desplat. Godzilla hits theaters May 16th, 2014 and stars Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn & Bryan Cranston.

Absolutely lovely sounding LP of this seminal motion picture classic. The score is indeed complete, unless one wants the selections with sound effects and dialogue ( which have been replaced with digitally replicated versions that are identical to the originals sans the effects ). Love the cover art which, while being the Heisei version of Godzilla rather than the original 1954, is still quite powerful in it's own right. A must have for Godzilla fans and music lovers.

A solid sound track that perfectly captures a rampaging Godzilla. Reminiscent of Silverstri or Horner at times, a nice change from all the Hans Zimmer stuff floating around (not that I dislike Mr Zimmer).

4 1/2 stars. I’ve been an admirer of Desplat for some time, scores such as The Golden Compass and his Harry Potter scores and more low key intimate scores like Benjamin Button have really impressed me and showed he is a true master of his craft, but I had no idea he would be able to pull off such a powerful, exciting, masterful and technically dazzling action / mystery score such as he has here with Godzilla. It is a very welcome hark back to the more traditional sound of action scores of the previous decades in terms of it being written for a large scale full orchestra where the orchestra takes centre stage and is you know…musical…in a way that the recent trend for such scores aren’t. Whereas many modern scores for action adventure films opt for the Hans Zimmer ‘epic’ school of simplistic, stripped down chord progressions and minimalistic background music dressed up with hyper bombastic and synthetic percussion and orchestra hits and oodles of electronica, Desplat’s Godzilla illustrates exactly what can be done when a master uses an orchestra to its full potential and writes actual music that has direction, emotion, intelligence, development and colour.

Large parts of the score are concerned with mood and atmosphere and does this extremely well, there is often a real sense of dread and Desplat’s use of synth effects add to the interesting orchestration and colours. There is often an electronic core to his tracks, lending cool and mysterious sounds upon which the orchestra builds around it. The score is often majestic, powerful and melodic, his love / loss theme is one of the best of recent times, a superior beautiful melody that tugs the heart strings without being overblown or sentimental.

High octane, monstrously dramatic/action music, yet retaining in full the Desplat artsy canon in Caijou proportions !!!

I love this vinyl! Beautiful artwork and sound (even though my copy of the first disc came with some damage to its outer edge, making part of the first track impossible to play...)
