Original Sin has a fair amount going for it. It introduces two new characters fairly well, making them likeable but flawed. 30th Century Earth is realised well also. The writer spends quite a lot of time constructing this future world and makes it easy to visualise. There is also the use of a very old villain - the appearance is unexpected for the most part, but more because the villain is fairly unknown rather than it being genuinely surprising. There is one particular thing however that the writer does not do well, and that is to include a ludicrous number of references to previous Doctor Who adventures. In fact any scene doing anything with the Doctor's character seems to incur some mention of a past story, and it's just unnecessary. There are some nice moments for the Doctor, where he is forced to really question his beliefs, but otherwise he's written fairly averagely. All in all, Original Sin is a good read, set in a well constructed world, moving at a good pace, but it does have some unavoidable faults.
