I like the look of the pendant, the copper colour is warm and a welcome change to standard white. I installed the pendant above my bed. I found trimming the cable down to be tricky. As many reviewers have stated the cable is a long 2 metres (6 and a half feet) so almost everyone using this light will have to cut it down. As it's a woven cable I had to be very careful when shortening it, so as not to let the cable fray too much.
Attaching it to the existing ceiling fitting was straightforward, but I think I was lucky with the size and type of connectors I already had, so do check what's in your ceiling rose before proceeding, you may need to reuse some of those connectors instead of the one provided. I had installed other similar pendants in the past, so had a good idea what to do: by all means contact an electrician if you are in ANY doubt about how to install.
The bulb gives off a soft light, equivalent to 60W, so ideal for my bedroom. The copper fittings add a warm glow which works well with wooden furniture. Other colours are available, including black, white, red, chrome and a baby blue, so choose carefully according to your decor.
All in all I am very pleased. The pendant is simple without being too stark, and the elaborate bulb is elegant, rather than just being a bare bulb.
I'm sure the manufacturers have considered the safety aspects of having exposed metal braiding running between the ceiling rose and the bulb holder.
The first thing I did was to shorten the cable - it's supplied with 6 feet of cable which just wasn't necessary in my son's room. This was easy following the instructions on the box. And this is where you first come across the allen key that tightens the ceiling rose onto the cable. When you're attaching the thing to the ceiling this allows you to get it looking flush. The downside is that it has a smaller diameter than our current ceiling rose so I now have a bit of touching up to do with the paint I used to decorate the room recently.
I'm not sure if a cup-hook was supposed to be supplied - this is required to hang the ceiling rose from your ceiling joist. Fortunately I had one in my toolbox.
The bulb is an interesting shape. Quite big, with thicker than normal tubes, and looks a bit like a normal flourescent bulb that has melted. It is 11 watts and quite bright compared to other 11 watt bulbs in our house. It also seems to get bright quite quickly.
So the big question - how do I rate it? Well, I like the low power consumption, and it's very designery, but for such a simple setup I suspect it might be a bit over-priced.Read more ›
That said the copper drop cap is otherwise an ideal replacement for an existing drop light which has seen much better days. The contrast between the copper and my green and wood decor is perfect.
The connectors do not match my existing connectors so I left the fitting to an electrician.
With there being no option to fit a shade, it is something of a commitent to a particular style which I would not make in any other room.
You might want to check to see if buying the drop cap and bulb seperately works out cheaper. It is too often the case these days that manufacturers charge you more for a set, rather than less.
Overall the end result suits my particluar needs, but for most people it may prove a lot and money and effort for something that they may well regret.
The flex and copper casing is very visually pleasing and the lumin cast from the included bulb is very pleasant indeed and lights extremly fast, as is the case with modern eco lights.
Fitting was straight forward, even with the need to add a hanging hook within the cup and wired up with no problems at all (allowing for my ladder of course).
Excellent quality, very nice piece and for the first time a light in my house is a conversation piece.
The Plumen E27 Metal Set Plus Drop Cap, in it's distinctly retro copper finish, really does fit and fit very well. It's incredibly versitile; we could have used the lamp in any of half a dozen different configurations, some of which included:
- Two sets together dropping from the upstairs landing, one close to the ceiling and one directly lighting the stairs below
- A group of five (sounds extravagant but £250ish is pretty good value for a bit of decorative lighting) in a bunch in the dining room
- One single unit coiled up so that the drop is just a few inches
But what we've gone for is a set of three that spread across the ceiling with the cable tacked up using copper pipe clips. So the bulbs are each still close to the centre of the room but at varying drops with the very attractive copper coloured cable in lines out from the rose and then back at right angles. It looks stunning.
The lights themselves are really nicely made - thickly plated cups, high quality braided wire and those iconic sculpted bulbs. The colour is a true copper, not brass, which is ideal.
The bulbs are a bit brighter than an old 60w and get to full output nice and quickly. Still not as fast as a halogen but fast enough. The manufacturer says the light is a warm white and I would say that's about right. In the adjacent kitchen we've got cool white LEDs and both sets seem to sit either side of natural daylight.Read more ›
