Ok, let's make this brief(ish), as there are already good reviews and I don't have hands-on experience with any of the alternatives.

Good points:

+ *Incredibly* vivid colours in all hues, including green. Whether or not you'll actually find them useful is up to you. Does very good pastel colours too. Seriously, I can't emphasise this enough: pinks, reds, yellows, oranges, blues, greens, purples, cyans, and white tinted with all of those; they all look fantastic. I'd find it hard to believe that other similar bulbs on the market will give you that range; most won't reach to the greens.
+ Cloud allows internet control, timers etc. via IFTTT or via your own programming, if you understand how a REST API works. Programming your own dawn on a Raspberry Pi? Not a problem. If you're not a coder, IFTTT simplifies matters up to the point of being ridiculously easy.
+ Want your lights to notify you if you get an email, facebook post, tweet, etc? Not a problem.
+ I've had no connectivity issues whatsoever. YMMV, but they always connect reliably for me. (5 GHz not supported unfortunately).
+ Real whites. No, not the whites made by combining colours like on cheapy bulbs, but real ones. And they scale from the warmer whites to the colder ones pretty damn well.
+ Solid and well made.
+ Well designed in terms of use. There's no goofyness here: if you switch the bulb off and on using the actual socket switch, they will go on to whatever you last set them to. If you do it rapidly, it will go to white, full brightness. This is worth a lot more than it looks; for example, if you get bored of it being a gadget, it can be a normal bulb for you instead.

I've been tempted to try one of these bulbs for a while, and with the price now half what it was on release, I decided to make the jump.

The packaging for the bulb looks great, and the bulb is well protected. On opening, the bulb itself looks very stylish, being the well made high end item that the price indicates.

Setting up the bulb on WiFi was very straight forward, the only slight negative was that the bulb needed a firmware upgrade to use the newest features, and this took approximately 20 minutes.

The app itself is very intuitive. It allows your to add a bulb to a group and name it - for example, "living room", "Corner Lamp". You can next either keep the bulb on the white light spectrum, changing it's intensity and warmth / coolness or jump into the coloured features.

I chose this bulb over the others on the market, as in tests I've read, it had a much greater range and depth of colours compared to the other coloured LED bulbs. Setting the bulb intensity to 50% or lower produces vivid, rich colours, whereas above that, more white light is added to the colour, increasingly so until the luminosity is at 100%.

What makes the bulb extra special is it's ability to integrate with IFTTT. IFTTT (if this then that) is a free website which allows you to create events and responses. Within 10 minutes I'd hooked it up so that if my next protect smoke detector detects carbon monoxide, it will breath the bulb yellow 20 times. If it detects smoke, it'll switch the bulb on and set it to red.

For fun, I hooked it up to my wifes iPhone GPS, so when she leaves work at night, the bulb breaths 5 times, so I know to get things ready.

When I first saw it I thought this brilliant idea would be the most fantastic thing to install in the house, and wishful thinking suggested it might be controlled by the network server even when we were out.

Alas I was mistaken. Without us having access to an iOS device, and being constrained to just PCs and Android, it has turned out to be no better than just another LED light bulb for us. I hope that the software will be improved so that we can use it as intended; then I might give it another star.

1. Software problems with Android app.

While I could make the network recognise the bulb after assigning its MAC number (printed on the bulb base) to a Static IP address in the router, and I then managed to get the wifi WPA2 password into the bulb, according to the Android app on my Samsung tablet, thereafter the app merely sat and waited to verify, and then eventually said it had failed. I deleted the app completely (not just 'Uninstalled') and re-downloaded it from Google Play store. Same results. After a couple of hours browsing the LIFX website support and trying everything I've given up and hard deleted the app again, partly because I do not like the permissions it has assumed in being able to take over the tablet, and partly because 'Uninstalling' it does not remove it - and I don't trust badly written software.

The little reset switch on the side of the bulb case does seem to have an effect: nothing to start with out of the box but a three pass flick reset it into factory defaults which enabled it to talk with my router (TD-W8970). Subsequent resets merely take one around the same annoying loop of failure again, a small tool is needed because after a few minutes the bulb's back-shell is much too hot to touch.
