By Victor HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 9 Sept. 2011
Format: Audio CD
Being a teen idol rockabilly artist in the late fifties seems to have been a dangerous profession, as many of the best known names died young (Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent and of course Cochran). Luckily they all left plenty of recorded material behind them.

Cochran's work was pretty classic, and many of his songs have really stood the test of time. Summertime Blues, which struck such a chord with the angst of the teenage market of the late fifties, has dated a little, but tracks such as `Three Steps to Heaven', `C'mmon Everybody' and `20 flight rock' still work well today, 50 years after they were recorded.

Cochran's music is deceptive, it sounds simple to today's ears, but was groundbreaking at the time. As well as developing the relatively new rockabilly and rock'n'roll styles, he was an innovator in recording technique, pioneering the art of multilayered tracks and studio tricks that would so influence people like the Beatles. The genius of it is that you don't notice the use of fancy technique, it all sounds perfectly natural. The end result is track after track of truly classic rock'n'roll, an essential addition to any music collection.

Eddie Cochran died when his taxi crashed in Wiltshire in 1960 while he was touring the UK. Gene Vincent survived the crash.

This CD includes 20 of his songs released between 1957 and as late as 1963.

He first came to public notice with Twenty Flight Rock, which was featured in the film 'The Girl Can't Help It' with Jayne Mansfield and Little Richard. His first hit was Sittin' in the Balcony, but his most popular recordings were probably Summertime Blues and C'mon Everybody, which Cochran co-wrote and which also demonstrated his considerable skill with the guitar .

My personal favourite is the stirring My Way, released after his death - which bears absolutely no similarity to the Frank Sinatra anthem of the same name.

The only dud track is the maudlin Three Stars, a tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper, best ignored for its sickly sentimentality and total lack of any of the qualities which made Eddie Cochran popular during his all too brief career.

Apart from that, this is a great collection which leaves the listener looking for more of the same...

Great buy, very happy with this purchase, really comes home to you when listening what a great loss he was and still is. He was the real deal, great singer, great songwriter, and great guitarist.

5.0 out of 5 stars He still rocks! 29 Feb. 2004

Eddie Cochrane is one of the most underrated and influential rockers of the 50's. Had he lived, he easily would have taken his place with Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Chuck Berry as icons of that era. Considering his tantalizingly brief career, he contributed a number of classics to the rock repertoire. My favorite is the sensational "Twenty Flight Rock," the song that quite literally first attracted John Lennon to Paul McCartney in 1957. (Check out Paul's great cover version of this song on his Russian album). "Summertime Blues" is another outstanding song which is as vibrant as it was when first released 45 years ago.
Eddie Cochrane is sadly under-appreciated today, but this album will give you an idea of his talent and foresight. He wrote his own songs, played a pretty mean guitar and was a pioneer of rock. This is a feel good album and highly recommended. In addition, the sound quality is excellent throughout.
