This box set contains five early albums by Mendes and whilst the packaging has its critics - I rather think that the mini-sleeves are rather cute - the music here is outrageously excellent. The live album is just beautiful but the studio albums are timeless with familiar and unfamiliar tracks. This is a lovely set of albums by a jazz master and the price for all five albums crazy cheap! Don't think about it, ignore the dross written about packaging and just buy it.

An excellent series of CD's covering his early recordings in Brazil up to Brazil 65. The 5 CD's come in facsimiles of the original LP sleeves which makes them look like miniature LP's. The sleeves have excellent sleeve notes which make listening to the music an even more enjoyable experience. I had to use a magnifying glass to read them but it was well worth the effort. All in all an excellent purchase.

This rating is strictly for the packaging and not the music. I have some earlier 'Original Album Series' sets [Blue Oyster Cult, Rory Gallagher, Al Green] and, while the CDs themselves are 'mini-LP', the box in which they are held is rather solid and relatively thick cardboard. However, typical for the muzak biz, they decide to cheap out and now house the mini-LPs inside a 'box' that is a thinner [if you can believe it] cardboard than the mini-LP sleeves. It is better to call these a sleeve. These won't last long as the CDs are held very snug within the box and are not removed easily AND then become a challenge to reinsert back into the box. Here the muzak biz takes a previously good idea and then cheapens it.....that blood on the floor that you see is another shot in the foot by the music industry....I have the next Blue Oyster Cult set for order in the new year when it is available. That will be the last one of these that I order. Yes, the sets are inexpensive and the mini-LP sleeves are nearly illegible, but please, let me at least put them in something that won't rip apart after awhile. Reminds me of some other recent packaging fiascos that have nothing to do with the music....the Derek and the Dominos 'glue' mess with the Deluxe box a year ago, or the recent Grateful Dead Europe '72 series of CD sleeves in which the CDs are packed so tightly that one risks tearing ...or the just-released Pink Floyd - WYWH and DSOTM Experience edition where, again the CDs are so snug inside the sleeve that one can easily rip [and I did] the sleeve when attempting to remove the CD.....

REGARDING THIS PURCHASE. IT IS BY FAR THE WORST C/D PACK THAT I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. I THOUGHT THAT THE BACKING GROUP WOULD BE ON SOME OF THE C/DS BUT THEY ARE ALL JUST MUSIC. I HAVE PLAYED THEM JUST ONCE AND I JUST AM COMPLLETLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE WHOLE PACK - HENSE THE OLD SAYING THAT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR.
I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS C/D SELECTION TO ANY FAN OF BRAZIL 66/77 AS I FEEL THAT THEY WOULD PROBABLY FEEL THE SAME WAY AS I DO ABOUT IT. "I HATE IT"
HAVE NEVER GONE WRONG WITH SERGIO MENDES & BRAZIL 66/77 OVER THE YEARS BUT SLIPPED UP BUYING THIS SET.

I had recently been blown away by the Black Eyed Peas remix version of Mascenada and was keen to explore more of the talent of Mr Mendez. Sadly this compilation of his early work is set well in it's period and is not going to satisfy the ears of a 21st century listener. However other albums I purchase at the same time are top class. Namely " Oceano " , " Brazileiro" and " Timeless ". I will be selling, hopefully, this collection which I just could not help but skip through. It will never see my mp3 player.
