Top Customer Reviews

By Og Oggilby TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 25 Mar. 2010
The J Geils Band will forever be associated with their breakthrough hit, 'Centrefold', but before that, they had about a decade's worth of making great records, and five of 'em are here. Capable of rockin' out with the kind of raunchy effectiveness of The Stones at their best, the live 'Full House' album is a punchy workout, but their debut album was a cracker, too. This set is really far too much of a bargain to pass up, frankly. Warners are obviously getting on the Sony / BMG 'Original Album Classics' band wagon, and they can continue to do so for all I care - put the rest of the Geils Warners catalogue OUT NOW!

I first saw the J Geils band in the early 70's at Bristol's Colston Hall. They are an American rock band from Massachusetts. Their brand of rock is very easy to get into; they were a great band to watch live. The band is named after their guitarist. They also have one of the best known harmonica players ever in `Magic Dick,' - Richard Salwitz. His rendition of `Whammer Jammer' is legendary. The band consists of Peter Wolf on vocals backed by the aforementioned harmonica, keyboards, drums, bass and Geils on guitar. They were a truly fine band with a very distinctive sound / blend of rock.
Here you have their first 5 albums, including the live `Full House' which captures them very well indeed. All 5 albums are highly rated by All Music. They made 14 albums (several live) plus the usual compilations.
They are probably best known here for their hit single `Centrefold' which reached number 3 in the UK charts in 1982. I believe that their early music, as we have here, is as good as they ever made. This is not heavy rock, it's more `let's have a party' rock.
Again this is wonderful value from the `Original Album Series.'

This set comprises of the "Original Album" series from Rhino and this set comprises of the five albums from J Geils - my favourite being the "live" album "Full House" which puts into context what J Geils Band were all about - A Truly Live Act.This album showcases the raw talents of Peter Wolf on vocals,Magic Dick on harp,J. Geils on impeccable guitar,Stephen Bladd on an "arsenal" of drums,Danny Klein on sound Bass and the great Seth Justman on searing organ and piano.
All albums span the career of J Geils at their height. What is lacking in this box edition "if you can call it a box set" is the presentation which is economical - no extensive notes or photos by loyal music crits - just discs in replica one sleeve jackets within a thin outer jacket - but hey at the price you cannot really complain - just that make sure you put on your specs to read the print.

Well There is no much information or deluxe packaging but the music inside will just blow your mind with a energetic mixture of hard rock and roll and R`n`B american style. They`ve got the energy, the passion, the voice, the harmonica and the songs that hit the seventies. Five of their best albums in a row together at a good price. Take no mistake and get it soon.

If you like blues rock, all five albums are excellent and at a very good price. Having only known this band previously for the single "Centrefold", I hadn't known what I'd been missing - thanks to Paul Jones for bringing this box set to my attention. Also, nice to see only cardboard packaging, but that each sleeve is printed with the original album artwork.
