Charles Mingus's autobiography 'Beneath The Underdog' (1971) reveals much of Mingus. The music contained in this magnificent bargain 'Original Series' stands alone but helps with an understanding of Mingus's self-trials,torments and turbulence. No doubt a genius who demanded and extracted the very best from his personnel. These five CDs are testimony to a man who was his own man and composed, produced, played, organised the very finest, everlasting music.

PITHOCANTHROPUS ERECTUS:Jan 1956.The title number, conceived as a jazz poem of the first man to stand erect. Divided into evolutionary concepts. Introduced by Jackie McLean's beautiful alto introduction it drives through group improvisation culminating in cry of the horns suggesting the demise of modern man.'A Foggy Day' -retitled 'In San Francisco' has a delightful melody of a Gershwin reworking with sound effects. 'Profile of Jackie' is brief but is testament to the altoist with Monterose (tenor sax) and Mingus in background sparking the piece. (He later had more than a spark with McLean). As a tribute to a musician this is up with the best. 'Love Chant' is a longer more basic run out with the horns in fine fettle driven by Mingus's bass with Monterose and Waldron (piano) playing probing solos.

THE CLOWN:Feb/Mar 1957. Mingus's effort to "try and please everyone". 'Haitian Fight Song' culminates in a huge swinging drive between Jimmy Knepper on trombone and Shafi Hadi on alto. 'Blue Cee' is a dedication to Mingus's wife. It is a broody number with Mingus at his most expressive with the ever present Danny Richmond on drums. 'Reincarnation Of A Lovebird is a gorgeous honour to Charlie Parker with Hadi playing emotionally in his own style.

BLUES AND ROOTS:Feb 59. Another classic.

This package represents astonishing value for money. Mingus is arguably the most significant jazz composer next to Duke Ellington. Mingus earliest gigs were with old school acts like Lionel Hampton and Tal Farlow but his career is defined not by his prowess as a sideman, impressive though that was, but by his innovations in the art of jazz composition. Presented here we have five of his strongest cds, each containing tracks that are 'must haves' and which cross the many sub-genres of jazz. Mingus didn't play swing, free or bop; Mingus played Mingus. Don't dismiss this as one of those bargain basement sets consisting of early tapes that were recorded before he was really famous or had properly developed. These cds are chock full of the real deal and would be a monstrously good introduction to the work of one of the music's greatest composers.

A very good chunk of Mingus' Atlantics here, rivalled only by the set Passions of a Man(containing 6 cd's,one of which is an interview...interesting once, hardly something to put on repeat),all of which are exceptional.Others have said pretty much what I was going too,so I won't waste your time repeating those comments, just would urge anyone interested in jazz(or orchestral, for that matter)composition to get to know Mingus. This is a great place to start. My only quibble, and it's not with the product,is with the price.I bought mine from a marketplace seller, who then reduced the cost by a pound. Not much, you may say,but I'd rather the pound went to charity.I hate it when they do that,I love a bargain--which it was, just less of a bargain than I could have had.Darn.
