Organic Family Hymnal is something altogether different - perhaps revolutionary. Rend Collective Experiment defies expectations even from the start of the bio. Not so much a band, more a bunch of friends collectively wondering how to make sense of the conundrum of life, God and community in and around their native Bangor, Northern Ireland. What Rend Collective Experiment's fifteen plus members add to the sound are lyrics that are both scriptural and contemporary, fresh and ancient. The Organic Family Hymanl features a duet with David Crowder.

There are a few great songs on this album. Musically speaking, 'Come on' (01), 'You Bled' (04), 'God is Near' (07), 'You are Love' (10) and 'Love Divine' (12) are all very nice tracks. My biggest criticism of the music is that as an album it is terribly disjointed in style. I can appreciate an eclectic album when it is done well; sadly this is not one of those cases. The lead singer has a strong and refreshingly unfamiliar voice that is not easily tiring. However, the female voice is not only uncomplimentary but with its addition leaves the collaborative sound too similar to their contemporaries for my taste; he doesn't need another vocalist and in fact the addition detracts from the sound. The attempt at an American style upbeat pop-rock version of 'Thine Be the Glory' is admirable but reminds me why I do not enjoy Hill Songs United. However, that is not a criticism but rather a reflection on taste. If that is your taste, you will certainly enjoy this lively retake of a classic hymn.
Lyrically speaking, while honest and accessible, putting arguably the greatest hymn ever written -- Love Divine -- and 'Thine Be the Glory' in their repertoire makes the rest of the lyrical content seem quite weak. Having said that, in comparison to the majority of popular Christian music of recent years, this album is perhaps quite good.Read more ›
I've got a a lot of time for Matt Redman and Stuart Townend and Rend Collective are another to enjoy as they point the way to The One who is The Way, The Light And The Truth.
All the songs are good and don't suffer from being over produced, all in all very highly recommended.
