I bought this CD principally for the Seven Pastels from the Lake of Constance which I was learning at the time - wonderful, intricate and other-worldly music, infused with a pagan eroticism, ostensibly emerging from the romantic school of composition but in reality pushing that genre - and the organ itself - to the limits. For many, including organists themselves, Karg-Elert begins and ends with his "greatest hit", the Chorale Improvisation Nun Danket Alle Gott. Herein is found music to enhance enormously any reputation that the composer may have earned by that single composition. Other tracks are equally satisfying, especially the 8 Short Pieces (which is in fact one long piece in 8 distinct styles). The CD is accompanied by a very informative booklet in which we learn among other things that Karg-Elert's organ playing was evidently not equal to his compositional genius. He also smoked 100 cigarettes a day which contributed to his poor health and probably early death.
