The Ordeal (aka Calvaire) delivers a terrifying and desperately dark tale of obsession, kidnap, and borderline psychosis that brings to mind films such as Deliverance, Straw Dogs and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but that has a continental flavour very much of its own.
"A gripping, utterly involving, horribly funny movie" -- The Guardian

A supposed psychological horror and a black comedy this could have worked really well, but this is very slowly paced, and to be honest a lot of the black comedy becomes just boring absurdity. It is nearing Christmas and Marc Stevens, a singer, has just finished his concert at an old people’s home. With one of the residents trying to hit on him, so does the manager of the place. But Marc is in a hurry, he is travelling south for another event.
But when his van breaks down he finds that he is guided to an inn that is no longer in operation. The owner of this place, Bartel puts him up whilst something can be sorted out with his transport. Bartel is still emotionally upset since his wife left him, and we see what lengths he will go to to have his Gloria back, as Marc is about to find out.
We see Marc being made into Gloria, by the mad Bartel, we see the mad Boris who has found his lost dog, although what he turns up with is not a dog, and we see all the villagers are nuts as well, as they take to this new Gloria.
With elements of such films as Deliverance it has to be admitted that this is a fresh approach to such films, but it becomes too surreal, absurd and too long as it has only a bit of suspense here and there. This could have been good but there are too many lost opportunities here. In all I would say to most people this is something to avoid, although there will be some out there who think it is good (although I can’t see why).
He is helped by a kindly older man, but soon things begin to turn odd. The film gets great mileage out of putting the lead character in that realm of social behaviour where you're not sure how to react because the other person is invading your boundaries, or insisting you do things that you don't want to - such as the scene where his host tells him a poor joke, and then insists he is sung a song by the crooner, because the host has 'given him a performance so expects one in return'...
It's not long before the plot begins to twist off into surreal horror, with the behaviour of certain characters becoming delusional and violent, and the film only continues to get weirder.
The violence is sporadic but unpleasant, but it's the emotional strain on the lead, and the psychological torture he's put through that the title is referring to the most. The film won't be for everyone, but those who watch it are unlikely to forget it.
I was NOT disappointed!
It's a classic tale with a guy stranded on some off-roads and meet's a bunch of psycho's.
So the movie doesn't bring much new to the table, but it's the atmosphere in the film that really got me hooked and there is a certain scene with some guys "dancing" in a bar, that's taken right out of a freakin nightmare.
It's very well played and you can't help feeling a bit sorry for the antagonist, even if he's completely insane.
To compare with others, I'd say it's heavily influenced by Misery and Chainsaw Massacre, but certainly not in a bad way.
Not über-gory, although it has it's moments, but it's the atmosphere and characters that are the strengths of this movie.
So if you're into movies like Eden Lake, Frontiers, Martys and those movies alike, I'm quite sure you'll appreciate this one.
