Product Description

Product Description

The Orchestrion Project was filmed at the former St Elias Church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in November 2010. It features Pat Metheny on guitar performing with the Orchestrion, a vast collection of mechanical instruments that surround Pat Metheny in this atmospheric setting. The focus of the performance is the Orchestrion Suite , a work written specifically for this combination and debuted on Pat Metheny s Orchestrion album released earlier in 2010. Added to this are other tracks from across Metheny s prolific career going right back to Unity Village from his debut solo album Bright Size Life in 1976 and including other tracks from the seventies, eighties and nineties. This is a unique collaboration between a master guitarist and the pinnacle of mechanical music. TRACKLIST 1) Unity Village Orchestrion Suite: 2) Orchestrion 3) Entry Point 4) Expansion 5) Soul Search 6) Spirit Of The Air 7) Improvisation #2 8) Sueño con México 9) Stranger In Town Bonus Tracks: 10) Improvisation #1 11) 80/81 Broadway Blues 12) Tell Her You Saw Me 13) Antonia

As a long time Metheny fan with particular liking for the Pat Metheny Group albums and music created with Lyle Mays I was originally a little wary of purchasing this album. However whilst this is much more, in a sense, intimate than the group albums, the music Metheny has written specifically for this ambitious project is quite superb. The title piece itself is amazingly complicated and hard to believe that he can play some of the intricate melody lines let alone arrange the wide range of accompaniments in the 'orchestrion'. That title track is incredibly addictive and some of the most beautiful music he has written. The other tracks written specifically for the Orchestrion are also superb, particularly the final track which has a haunting bass line and full of trademark Metheny guitar-playing. The DVD is highly entertaining, although the camera work at times can be frustrating, too little focus on Metheny's playing and too much zooming around the Orchestrion instruments themselves. Also highly entertaining are some bonus tracks not included on the album, interpretations of older pieces for the orchestrion.
Noet: on my copy the accompanying notes indicate 6 extra tracks but I can only find 3 of them, nevertheless a minor complaint, otherwise this is very highly recommended.

Absolutely stunning DVD from one of the world's greatest guitar maestros. No musicians here apart from Pat who plays along to a cornucopia of instruments all of which are computer programmed. None of this however sounds like what you would expect it to. It sounds at times like a big band and at other times like two or three accompanying musicians. The point is though, that for almost three hours this sounds like a group of first class musicians. Great to listen to and fascinating to watch. I have a couple of other Metheny DVDs and whilst this one is very different from those it is equally as entertaining.

I find it hard to believe the harsh comments from so called Metheny fans. For a start Metheny is not & never was a Lee Ritnour kind of artist. Pat has alway been searching for constantly different settings to play his guitars in. Pat is a true artist who is prepared to take risks to broaden his & our horizon and take us with him on his beautiful journey. Boring this is not. As a metheny fan how can you give this one star, take away the robots would,nt you be happy with his wonderful guitar playing? In my book Pat is to be praised for alway trying to keep things interesting & not like some fusion/ jazz artists churning out the same old 'heard it all before' stuff. I also recommend the unity band sessions which has some robot friends along with real ones too for a brilliant set. In conclusion this is worth having in your collection for Pat,s playing alone which is fantastic as you would expect, & wonderful renditions of his classic material. Yes it,s true Pat is just a one man band but no one does it better so don,t let this put you off from seeing the Master at work!!!!

I have seen this show twice in concert and I am glad with the rendition of it on the first DVD. Nothing more to say than it was/is a thing to see. I am not giving 5 stars because I feel disappointed with the second disk. Most of it is available on Pat's web page and youtube, and if you expect insight on HOW IT WORKS, you ' ll be disappointed like me because there is none of that on it. Anyway, Pat is a genius and probably does not want to open his secrets too much. Recommended buy for sure in all cases ....

There is no doubt that there is a massive amount of technical wizardry involved in this project and only a maestro could carry it off. One can watch and be amazed that there are few if any wrong notes or clashes but what is it all about. The music lacks any real emotion and while of technical interest, it is boring and repetitive to listen to. It is all style and very little substance and I doubt anyone would remember a single passage of the music as opposed to the technical wizardry 10 minutes after switching the DVD off.
Compared to this, Beyond the Missouri Sky is seventh heaven.
Like many things one can do on ones own, this is not really for others to watch or listen to.
