Incredible bang-for-buck, but not perfect.
4 out of 5 stars
Incredible bang-for-buck, but not perfect.
Firstly, wow. Until picking up the Optoma HD141X on Black Friday, I had no idea you could get such bang for your buck! The Good:It's easy to see why this is the Number 1 Top Seller in Projectors (As of Jan '16). For a few hundred pounds you can turn any light-coloured wall in your home into a huge, high definition screen. The image is great, straight out of the box. After carefully placing it to ensure it's level and a decent sized image, a simple twist of the lens to focus and you've got yourself a 1080p Full HD movie, in monster proportions. My current setup gives me a 100" Screen, on a regular painted white wall. Colours are vibrant, brightness is high and the image is sharp. The menu is easy to use. You can choose to run the projector in normal or 'Eco' mode (the latter of which essentially reduces the brightness of the lamp in exchange for longer life and lower power consumption). I have found that 'Eco' mode is more than adequate brightness at 100". Perhaps with a larger image, or in a brighter room, you may be better suited for 'normal' mode. The Bad:Blacks levels leave something to be desired. I was under the impression, being new to projectors, that the black bars at the top and bottom of a widescreen movie wouldn't be 'projected' e.g. would be completely dark. Unfortunately this is not the case, and as such the closest you can get to black is a dark grey. Fortunately this is offset by the 'wow' factor of having a huge, vibrant projected image. It's not something that the average person would pick up on. Apparently the BenQ W1070 has better Black Levels and Colour, albeit you're looking at a more expensive projector.Rainbow Effect. I had read a few blogs and reviews, curious as to what this was. I'm sad to report that I am susceptible to this effect and it can be distracting once you notice it for the first time. It's more noticeable in high-contrast, fast-moving scenes, or if you scan your eyes quickly around the image. Again, apparently the BenQ W1070 doesn't suffer as much from this. It's also a fairly noisy device. I'm fortunate enough to have a budget 5.1 Home Surround setup, so as long as there's something going on you won't notice it. When the action stops and there's some regular, quiet conversation happening, you will hear the whir of the fans. It personally doesn't bother me too much, as I find it no louder than the Xbox One that I use as a BluRay player. Ideally you'd want it quieter, but for the price it's not a huge con. There is no lens shift. You will need to place the projector in precisely the right spot, as there's no flexibility to shift the image further up or down the wall. the BenQ does have a small amount of lens shift, so if you know you can't position this in exactly the right spot, perhaps continue shopping around. The Noteworthy:As expected, the on-board speaker doesn't offer much in terms of a theatrical experience. I've not put this as a con, and it hasn't affected my rating as I don't think anybody expects or plans to use the built-in speaker as the primary means of sound. It's absolutely fine and loud enough to take to a friends house to watch some Football, however if you're even half serious about creating a decent movie/game watching experience you'll use a decent sound system to compliment your visual setup. The remote control has very brightly back-lit buttons. This can be a little jarring half way through watching a movie in the dark.Although the projector is advertised as being 3D, it's important to note that you will need 'active' glasses (the ones with batteries) and a transmitter to sync them to. The glasses alone won't allow you to watch 3D content with the HD141X.It's also worth using a projector-distance calculator to determine how big of an image this will produce given the constraints of your home. There is some (though very little) zoom so you can change the size of the projected image, however you want to go into this informed so you don't have any unpleasant surprises, such as an image too big for your wall. (Google Projector Central for a brilliant calculator that shows min/max distances and projected image sizes)I absolutely recommend this projector if this is as far as your budget can stretch - you're getting a lot for your money. If you're seriously into top quality visuals, and know your LCD's from your OLED's then perhaps save a little more and go for something like the BenQ W1070 or better, to get the deeper blacks and better contrast. Please find attached a picture from my phone showing a frame from Disney/Pixar's Inside Out as displayed on my HD141X.

And there was light. And it was good. In fact, it was very good indeed !

This is my first projector and unusually I took the risk of buying it with no reviews posted - I'm so pleased I did. If you are on the cusp of getting one... then just do it. You only live once and its well worth the money. It'll blow you away. Get it from Amazon - thats best price by far - it sometimes says 2-3 week delivery but every other day it seems to get more stock !

It was either this or the BenQ W1070. I went for the Optoma because the throw characteristics better suited my room setup and because of the many good reviews for the previous model - the HD131xe. There are more than 25 5* reviews on Amazon.com. Use this link to check your throw distance against screen size: [...] Google ProjectorCentral dot com and select Optoma HD141x (sorry Amazon removes the link)

I'm using a 106" glass bead screen (16:9) 3.8m from the projector, which is ceiling mounted - it fills the screen perfectly with no zoom.

Whats in the box? Very brightly backlit (blue) remote, 2xAAA batteries, UK plug, European plug, quick start page + manual on disc, projector. There is no HDMI cable. There is no lens cover - but apparently a Pringles lid works!

Whats the build quality like? Good enough. Its much lighter than I thought it would be - only ~2.4kg. Its about the size of a regular breakfast cereal box. Its piano black on top (protected with a peelable film) and whilst it looks good overall it is a wee bit on the plasticky side. That said it really is a non issue if you are ceiling mounting ('cos you'll only see the good side and its beyond close up scrutiny). The focus wheel feels precise, but the zoom lever feels a bit vague.

Is the fan noisy? No. But you will hear a very gentle whir in quiet parts of a film - its there if you want to really concentrate on hearing it. Don't let that put you off - you'll be immersed in other sensory things ! The very first film I played was Saving Private Ryan - I actually worried that the fan wasn't working during the landing craft opening scene (which has brilliant sound effects) - I just couldn't hear it at all, even with my ear right next to the projector.

Does it run hot? Yup - as you would expect its like a regular little fan heater when up to temperature. There's a bit of light leakage on the right hand side - but nothing to worry about.

Is it easy to ceiling mount? Yes. I bought a fairly standard extendable mount from Amazon. It has 3 screw holes on the base that take screws that are like electric machine screws for holding sockets on the wall. Its so light that I don't think you'd have issues fixing it to a ceiling with hollow anchors. One point to note is that the HDMI/Power connections are on the side ( left if you are behind it and its table mounted or right it you are behind and its ceiling mounted).

Now what about the important part - the 2D picture quality? Well, I was stunned. My wife was stunned (she never gets excited by tech). She just loved watching The Holiday in glorious 106" full HD. I didn't mind seeing Cameron Diaz this way either! You will never want to watch a movie on anything less after you have experienced this.

I configured it using settings advised by Malcolm M in his review for the HD131xe (thank you for those!) - that gave me a great start reference point - I tinkered a little with the settings but to be honest I was perfectly satisfied with those values - even though the contrast ratio and brightness are improved in the HD141X. Despicable Me 2 was what I used for a colour definition test - its just amazing on Bluray.

***UPDATE on 3D *** Just tried out 3D - Wow ! The effect is amazing on a 106" screen - the depth of field and colour reproduction are faultless - kids (large and small) will totally love this as a special film treat

The 3D source was "Finding Nemo" running on a Sony BDP 4100 3D Bluray Player and I used the following DLP Link glasses - no need to spend a fortune !3D Active Rechargeable Shutter Glasses for DLP-Link Projector *WIRELESS*(NOT FOR TV). All you need to do is to configure the 3D mode to "DLP Link" on the projector - switch on the glasses and it just works ! These glasses are USB rechargeable (they worked right out the box)and the build quality is great for ~£15.

Just to state the obvious - if you use the projector in anything other than a reasonably dark room, the picture will look washed out - so don't go thinking that you can use it in any lighting conditions. I hate the dark nights in Scotland from October to March, but this year ... bring them on! I'm so fired up to watch a whole host of movies all over again in big screen format at home this winter.

I hope you get one and enjoy as much as I do.

Oh - one final hurrah - the tracking system used by the courier DPD (called Predict) is fantastic - it allows you to track where the delivery driver is and how many parcels until he gets to you and estimated time to the nearest 15mins - best delivery experience yet. Even tells you the driver name - so cheers Alex !

In my case, this projector is operated in a living room with a large bay window shielded only by micro-blinds - so there is normally a good deal of ambient light - and the image is projected onto a dark beige wall. Nonetheless, even during the day, when it is light enough in the room to read a newspaper easily, the picture quality is not so far off that of an LCD TV - which is astounding if you are old enough to remember the days of a barely discernible image projected onto a white sheet in a darkened room which we used to put up with. There is a 32" Samsung LCD in the same room, and with a slight movement of my head I am able to compare the two, and whilst the projector image is a little dimmer, there is really not a huge difference between them. I am projecting from 11'6", and throwing up a 106" diagonal image, which is about the largest image obtainable from the HD141X from that distance. At night with no lights on in the room, the picture is just brilliant.

Straight out of the box, the image is very good and perfectly watchable, albeit a little warm for my taste with slightly too much red in actor's faces, but, after calibration, complexions become very natural, and other colours appear pretty accurate too.

The projector is quite light (2.4 Kg), but built solidly enough, with a full complement of inputs including two HDMI ports. I use one of those ports for my PC, and this throws a large, clear, sharp, image onto the wall. The HDMI inputs can be switched from the remote control, so going from Blu-ray on one port to PC on another, for example, is a matter of pressing one button, which is very convenient. I have the PC on its own port, and an HDMI switch/splitter attached to the 2nd HDMI port which serves to feed a Sky HD box and a Blu-ray player to the projector.

Speaking of the remote-control, it's a comfortable size and shape, and holds all the buttons required to set up and operate the machine. When pressed, these buttons are brightly backlit in blue for a few seconds, with the legends standing out clearly in black. It would be much handier if the buttons illuminated when the remote was picked up, but you can't have everything.

In a silent room the noise from the cooling fan is roughly comparable to a computer fan and has a fairly unintrusive tone (i.e. not shrill or distracting). My projector is mounted in a glass AV stand, with the upper shelf 5cm above it. An open shelf, or ceiling mount may vary the sound somewhat. In my case, the soundtrack of TV programmes or Blu-ray films completely masks it, and it disappears into the background. The speaker in the projector itself produces a decent volume, which would be fine for presentations, but for a more realistic experience when watching TV or Blu-ray, the projector should ideally be hooked up to a speaker system, utilising the projector's 3.5mm audio output jack.

In my view, blacks produced by the projector are satisfyingly deep, and whites are quite bright (even against a beige wall) - perhaps a picky videophile would find fault, but I don't believe that the average user would. The brightness of the image produced, and colour accuracy, could doubtless be improved further by projecting onto a white screen, but I am very satisfied with the image as is, so doubt that I shall bother, and would recommend that you try projecting onto a wall before investing in an expensive screen, to see what you think. As the room where the projector is installed is a normal living room, I like the fact that I can achieve a satisfactory image without having to alter the character of the room with a screen.

3D performance is startlingly effective, and I have not noticed any of the 'rainbow' effect normally associated with DLP projectors such as this.

I genuinely feel that this projector offers excellent value for money as well as an impressive viewing experience, and would heartily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una muy buena inversión si te gusta mucho el cine y ls series en buena calidad.
Reviewed in Spain on 4 November 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Un Full HD 3D très abordable
Reviewed in France on 21 December 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Beamer, Tolles Bild, Top-Preisleistungsverhältnis
Reviewed in Germany on 10 August 2015

Habe mir Captian America-The Return of the First Adventure in 3D zugelegt.

In buona sostanza a mio parere :

contro:

- neri in alcuni casi poco definiti

pro:
