The lens is a heavy piece of kit for its size, body is made of metal in fetching black and white with the end plate of a vey soild piece of plastic. The action of the focus ring is very smooth with just the right amount of drag to make focusing easier. It really does feel quality, even compaired to the Nikon and Sigma glass that I also own, so I am unable to fault the build.
Now, this is a fixed apeture lens, the camera (D40 & D5000) will not "meter" nor recognise this lens. You are on manual and the focus is a bit difficult to master at first as without aid of a split focus screen (those were the good old days!)you are relying on your eye to get the sharpness, but both of my DSLR`s auto focus lights will illuminate when the image is percieved to be "in" and I have found this to be reasonably accurate when viewing the images taken. Anyhow, my Corel photoshop soon sorts out any disasters. One thing that is important is that your viewfinder has to be set up as per the camera handbook for sharpness of focus as this will give less than satisfactory results. I have not used "live view" with this lens as you really need the eye in the viewfinder.Read more ›
