As the war in Europe entered its final months, the world teetered on the edge of Armageddon. While Soviet forces smashed their way into Berlin, Churchill feared that Britain would be defenceless against Stalin s increasing occupation of Europe. The British Premier ordered his military planners to prepare the top secret Operation Unthinkable the plan for a pre-emptive Allied attack on the Soviet Empire on July 1, 1945. Using U.S., British, Polish and German forces the invasion would liberate Soviet-occupied East Germany and Poland and force Stalin back to the conference table. If the Allies did not win a quick victory, the Third World War would ensue. Fifth columnists, British and US double agents, as well as Polish communists, all threatened to derail the startling plan. This haunting study of the war that so nearly was outlines the motivations behind Churchill's plan and the logistics of launching a vast assault against a recent ally who had beaten Hitler. Well supported by a wide range of primary sources from the Churchill Archives, Imperial War Museum, King s College, as well as US and Polish archives, this is a fascinating insight into the suspicion and mistrust between old allies. Operation Unthinkable became the blueprint for the Cold War.

Jonathan Walker is a member of the British Commission for Military History, The Haig Fellowship, and an Honorary Research Fellow in War Studies at The University of Birmingham. He is also a former Vice President of the West Country Writers Association. His books include 'The Blue Beast - Power & Passion in the Great War', 'Poland Alone', 'Aden Insurgency', The Blood Tub', 'War letters to a Wife' (as Ed.) and 'Churchill's Third World War'. He has also just edited a remarkable memoir, 'D-Day, Arnhem & The Rhine - A Glider Pilot's Story', a new publication concerning the exploits of Robert Ashby and his valiant comrades during the Second World War. He has also contributed to four more books on military history and when he is not navigating battlefields across the world, he lectures on aspects of 20th conflict to a wide variety of institutions and associations, as well as giving talks aboard cruise ships.

Enjoyed this book immensely and found the subtle, and not-so-subtle, power-play between the 'big three' from Teheran to Potsdam particularly revealing. With the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising coming up later this year, perhaps Churchill's forlorn but determined effort to help Poland, via the Special Duty Squadrons based in Italy, will be remembered every bit as much as the Russian abandonment, and later domination of that country. What was it Sir John Slessor said: "the blackest-hearted, coldest-blooded treachery on the part of the Russians". I wonder where we would be now if the 'Unthinkable' had actually been the do-able!. A slim book summarising a study commissioned by Churchill to push Russia back East in 1945. There were many such studies, and this one seemed particularly thin. Very little evidence is offered for the more gaudy claims, e.g. to use German forces, or to use A-bombs.
