Made in 1975 on location in Prague the film deals with the true WW2 story of the plan to assassinate "The Butcher of Prague", Nazi Reinhard Heydrich, the plan was in reality called Operation Anthropoid, that has been changed for this movie to Operation Daybreak but there is a more recent movie called Anthropid with Cillian Murphy, more of that later.
Operation Daybreak is a superb movie with high production values, directed by Lewis Gilbert who is famous for directing hugely successful James Bond Films such as You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Moonraker, he knows how to tell a story and mix it with action but unlike a Bond film this is not fantasy, it's a true story and a gripping one at that. Good use is made of locations in and around Prague which in 1975 probably was not so different to how it was in 1942, the character of Heydrich is fleshed out by Anton Differing who has a few scenes to establish what a thoroughly nasty piece of work he was, I would highly recommend this movie, I remember seeing it as a schoolboy 30 years ago and I had always wanted to see it again to see if it was as good as I remembered it to be, I was not disappointed. A word about the 2016 movie "Anthropoid" directed by Sean Ellis and starring Cillian Murphy. That movie is the same story and also a very good film, there are scenes and shots in that film that look to me like they are shot for shot duplicates of what appears in Operation Daybreak, the scriptwriter and director had obviously viewed Operation Daybreak before making "Anthropoid" , I would be most surprised if they hadn't, I did also enjoy "Anthropoid", if you like the story both movies are worth watching and having, I would say Operation Daybreak has the edge and is somehow a more real film.
The problem with this material is it is sourced in far East
And subtitles are in very poor or irrelevant English
Especially when you try to spell Reichtenfuhrer
However it was good to see the movie againbut I won't buy another from this supplier again
The film is movingly shot and you feel real compassion for the characters (bar one or two). It makes you really feel proud and grateful for the hard fought freedom we have today, due to the bravery of others who gave their everything during the war. The action scenes are really great. One of the most moving parts is the haunting synthesizer music, giving this a sad and melancholic feeling to the film.
This film is unmissable and if you can track it down, even on original VHS, it is well worth it: once watched you will never forget it. It moved me to visit Prague in 2002 to see the church where it all happened - the bullet holes are all still there: again well worth the visit (again I was moved to tears - and at Lidice too!)
Now for the DVD: believe it or not, the only available version is a naff Korean version! It looks like a pirate copy recorded off a 6th hand video tape. Annoyingly, in the scenes spoken in German, there are no English subtitles. There are no extras.
WARNER BROTHERS: WHY HAVE YOU NOT RELEASED THIS ON DVD WITH PLENTY OF EXTRAS???? From your point of view you are missing out 1000's of sales. From the viewers point of view, we are missing out on a great film.
And incidentally people, there's no point writing reviews saying 'when will/I can't wait for it to be released properly' if you don't contact Warner Bros customer services and ask them to release it on dvd. I did and they emailed to say they had taken note: they'll take more note if more people email them!

The film itself is a great film but for some reason, the amateurs who put this DVD together cut a few corners.Read more
