I loved this book; I was laughing at Darby by the second page and loved her straight away. Darby is a physician’s assistant working in an ER room of a Chicago hospital but you quickly realise Darby is somewhat of a wallflower within social circles and quite a loner that has never quite fitted in. She is the daughter of a senator but hates the political facade and hypocrisy so tries to remain on the edge of the life other than appeasing her distant father by attending his election social events. However Darby’s inner monologues and views are hilarious and you can’t help but love her.

Trick is an enigma but a great character, the persona you first meet is distant and sullen, he has a mysterious past due to a period of amnesia and a really difficult childhood coupled with a severe distrust of women though he isn’t sure why so he creates an image in order to keep women especially at arm’s length but he sees something in Darby that he likes as much as he tries to fight it. You don’t get much of a POV from Trick but the author cleverly gives us just enough little snippets from Trick to keep the mystery of his past flowing through the book.

The pair first meet when Trick visits the ER but after their paths continue to cross the attraction is obvious for Darby and due to the image Trick hides behind they agree to being friends. The lines of friendship becomes blurred as Darby fights to contain her attraction and it all comes to a head a few weeks later when they cross the line leaving Darby confused and Trick pulling away. Darby soon learns of Trick’s true persona and the couple begin to open up to each other as they start what is a lovely relationship.

2.5 - 3 Stars in my Sky!

This is a bit of a strange review for me to write because I was expecting to really enjoy Only Trick, but although there were some moments I really did enjoy, a lot of it annoyed me and fell a bit flat.

I read the book purely based around the synopsis. The idea of a gay make-up artist who has amnesia and is obsessed with a women, was just too intriguing for me to miss. However after after the big reveal I found myself getting more and more aggravated with the main characters.

Trick cannot remember a big chunk of his life and is very guarded around women (he's actually pretty moody and rude). When he meets Darby he expects her to be just like all the other spoilt women who fawn over him, and is shaken when she isn't.

I initially really liked Darby and appreciated how she stood up to Trick and questioned his attitude. I even found her slightly stalkerish behaviour towards him kinda of amusing. The problem I had with her was how she let him treat her later on in the story. She seemed to lose a lot of her sass and becomes almost subservient to him. She goes from quirky and fun, to needy and jealous. I was literally willingly her to tell him off and find her strength again.

Trick's behaviour was what really annoyed me because he seemed to think it was fine for him to do what he liked, but would become extremely jealous of any guy around Darby. I did appreciate his search for the truth and how much he genuinely cares for her, but it was the manner in which he shut down and how he often treated her that I had problems with.

Oh man, she done did it again! I just laughed, balled my eyes out and feel thoroughly messed up from the mind of Jewel E. Ann again. This woman is an absolute goto author for me for some of the best reading material I’ve ever read – simples!

She’s pens emotional drama, fun times, damn hot sexy times and undeniably brilliant thought out and compiled character worlds that I get completely lost in the words as I devour them.

Darby, oh my god, this woman is my twin! Her emotional baggage, her emotional trust and her emotional confidence issues, just absolutely perfectly penned! I felt it each time she got knocked but I’ll say something Darby is 1000% stronger than me too, I aspire to have her zealous, her compassion and her forgiving nature, she is just the BFF material for sure and I’d be her BFF in a heartbeat! ☺

Trick, dear Lord you knew it was building to his revelations for not only us as the reader but for him himself and wow, this man grew with each chapter, and I absolutely loved the brilliant way Jewel only penned the little nuggets from him until later in the book and then woohoo we suddenly got more from Trick and his alpha mind. Trick was unlike any other book boyfriend I’ve met and I’ve a good few thousand lol – he was unique and that was so refreshing too.

But not only the two main protagonists, the secondary cast played a major role, all of them!

Can’t say more than just brilliant, I absolutely loved this to bits and it’s definitely a book I’d recommend to anybody that likes hot, sexy, different emotional reads. It’s also a book I will definitely be reading again for sure.

I received a gift of Only Trick in return for an honest review. My reviews are my own and are 100% honest.
