Been looking (and waiting) a long time for a receiver such as this to appear which will play my music whichever format I throw at it. It has a multitude of connections to meet most needs. Whether you want to stream your music wirelessly (or hard wired) from a laptop or pc through it, play CD's or listen to the tuner via AM or FM or via the internet, this receiver will do it. In addition, if like me, you back up your iTunes library on a USB flash drive, you can just plug that in the front USB port for direct playback of audio files, including, MP3, AAC, FLAC & APPLE LOSSLESS and various other formats (a big bonus for anyone that has maybe imported their CD collection into iTunes in various formats). You can also just plug your iPod or iPhone in the front USB if you prefer (with direct play through the onboard DAC's - another box ticked).

So what does it sound like? Well, I bought mine with a set of Dali Zensor speakers (there are various packages available on Amazon) and it's true to say I was startled by the quality of the sound. I was expecting good playback of CD's, but playback of MP3's etc through the system was unexpectedly good.

The remote is well laid out and easy to use (though the manual I got failed to point out that you need to use the 'return' button and central arrow buttons to navigate through folder hierarchies when selecting folders and tracks from flash drives).

The receiver unit itself is beautifully (and sturdily) built and occupies an A4 footprint space. Don't sit it anywhere open-topped if you have kids - the ventilation grill is on the top surface, just waiting for spills!

Any cons?

Firstly I'm no audiophile, I just needed a replacement with network capability for my main hi fi, an 'old faithful' midi system from the late 1980's. So my review is as follows

-Set up pretty straightforward, took me about 30 minutes from receiving the package including removing my old system and putting the new unit in, and playing cd's, networking music, internet radio, fm/am, and vinyl.
-It sounds excellent on both my Technics speakers and Wharfedale diamonds irrespective of the source, digital, record deck etc. I can only imagine what it would sound like on really good speakers but that is to be addressed later in the year :-)
-Not fully explored the ipod connectivity yet, but it seems easier to control from the ipod than directly from the Onkyo and if you want a specific mix formulate your own playlists
-Still getting to grips with the internet radio but performance seems pretty good from whay I've listened to so far.

-4 stars would have been be given for the fact the the screen output is small but this I have ignored as I use my smartphone to control it (and I think most people would do this), once used to the control layout its the best way to control the device wherever you are in your house.

I ordered silver but black supplied! - I liked it and couldnt see any benefit in changing it, in many ways a better colour choice as it is the same colour as the rest of my IT and audio visual equipment. No delivery note with the item. So supplier wouldn't get 5 stars.

I did consider other offerings from Marantz and Denon but this seemed the best for my needs and budget (bargain at £249 IMO)

I'm happy with this product after 8 days of ownership (and use)

Please note that although it claims as much in the product description the Onkyo is not WI-FI enabled. You will have to buy the UWF-1 dongle (about £30 and with mixed reviews) before it will work wirelessly. When I have received aforementioned dongle I'll try and give a more helpful review of the Onkyo.

This unit has serious flaws in it's playback capabilities: When playing back mp3 files, from either a network or USB source it inserts a three second gap between tracks! This completely destroys the listening experience for albums which are intended to have gapless playback e.g. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon. Also when playing tracks from a folder e.g. on USB, it will only list and play the tracks in alphabetical order, it does not read the track number from the ID3 tag in the MP3 header so unless your file names include the track number at the beginning of the name the playback order will be incorrect.

I find it unbelievable that a device of this calibre should have such a poorly implemented play back capability.
