I find it hard to believe that a selection of some of the most brilliant essays written in the last twenty years about psychology, personality, emotion, desire, and being human in the modern world by one of our most erudite, thoughtful, and ingenious writers is not a runaway bestseller. It should be. If you are fascinated by human nature--by our contrary, self-defeating, over-complicated ways of dealing with the world, you must read this. You simply must.
Phillips astounds with his erudition and subtle flippancy in sharing an astounding insight as though it were self evident. It is worth taking the time to find a favourite of your own among these gems. They are not only entertaining and pedagogical, bit for me, also therapeutic. Probably not for everyone, but likely to be deeply appreciated by a few.
