Review

It has the feel of something quite big and satisfying... Muchamore's voice is fresh and direct. (Daily Telegraph)

Muchamore's plain, punchy, often funny style ... is highly effective... This clever, tense novel is a great way of getting bored boys interested in history. (Amanda Craig, The Times)

This book was un-put-downable. It gripped me from start to finish, and was just as good as the CHERUB series, if not better! (Aaron, 14, First News)

Gripping and compelling (- Carousel)

A must-read for all teenagers. (Woman's Way)

A high-octane read that kept me on the edge of my seat. (Daily Express)

My favourite book is One Shot Kill... it is full of adventure and excitement. -Charlie Weeks / 11 yrs old (The Abingdon Herald)

This is book 6 in Muchamore's Henderson's Boys series. You could read this book as a stand alone book, but I wouldn't recommend it. On it's own this would be very good book. Taken as part of the series it is a truly exceptional book and one of the best pieces of modern fiction I have read. This is because the series as a whole allows for a great deal of character development, and jumping in towards the end you would miss some of this, and well as some of the background information on the story.

This book begins with Rosie dropping into occupied France. Muchamore started writing for boys, but the strength of his female characters is amazing, making this a perfect book for girls who want a story with something more than vampires and snogging. Rosie is wonderfully crafted character who breaks traditional female stereotypes. Rosie's mission doesn't go to plan but she soon finds herself in possession of notebook with details of a new weapon that may turn the tide of the war back in Hitler's favour. This may be CHERUB's most important mission to date. As soon as the details of this notebook come to light, Marc, Luc, Paul and Sam begin training as snipers in a nasty contest between the youngsters to see who will be chosen for the mission. Henderson will be going as well and we will see old friends from previous volumes as well as a few new ones, but I will keep the details limited to avoid any chance of spoilers. I will only add one small fact - the weapon featured in ths book is not fictional, it was being developed by the Nazi's at this time.

This book is written in Muchamore's usual fast moving high action style. There are no lulls in this book - or good places to stop reading for the night - meaning I had to finish it the first night.

The henderson's Boys books were the first of the CHERUB books that i read. I was riveted from start to finish. However there are some obvious mistakes in the series which could have been avoided by some research:
Just as an instance:-
In the earlier books SS?Gestapo officers were given military not SS ranks (happily in the later books this was rectified)
In one book we had a captain, in army uniform visiting the establishment. An army captain is lower in rank than a naval commander, so would not have been called sir or saluted first by Henderson.
.The sergeant who was in charge of parachute training was called sir by a lot of people. NO! Maybe the 'kids' would have called him sir but anyone else would have addressed him as sergeant, sarge or sar'nt.
The sergeant who trained the 'kids' as snipers was referred to as an Air Force sergeant. He would have been an Army Air Force sergeant.

Little details but as I said - a little research would have avoided this.

I was not keen on the many references to thrashings and to even suggest that Henderson would have authorised a 'birching' of one boy by another just a short time before a mission is kind of ridiculous. The only related issue that I found slightly amusing was when Marc was caned on his bare backside by a tiny nun for fighting.

All in all, though, I really enjoyed the whole HB series, and was sorry when there were no more to read.. .

I have given this five stars but as it was a present I really don;t know. I bought it for my grandson as he has got all the previous books in the series and he really enjoys them. Amazon always notify me when the next book is due for publication and I often pre-order,

My 12 year old son started with the Cherub series and when that was finished he romped through the HB series. Bedtime lights out are challenging as he says "but I'm at a good bit" the thing is he's always at a good bit! Thoroughly recommend.

Following the trend of all the Henderson's Boys, this book was amazing. I loved it all the way through. It was impossible and I made sure I woke up 1/2 hour earlier every day so that I could read a chapter daily. Yes, this book was so good that I changed my routine to suit it!
Before finding the Henderson's boys series, I didn't read that often- but now I can't stop! This book is truly amazing.

Amother great book by Robert Muchamore - I could hardly put it down. Highly recommended, especially for readers of the CHERUB series, which is kind of linked.

Great for a 13 year old. He also loves Muchamores Cherub series. Does worry me slightly that he won't let me read them until he's finished the series though.....have read lots of good reviews and the school recommends them.
