Product Description

Giles Duley releases his latest book - One Second of Light One Second of Light is Duley's first collection, covering his work from 2005-2015. The book is a hardcover 151 pages of breath taking images, with contributions from Gino Strada, Melissa Fleming, A.L. Kennedy and an honest interview with Giles conducted by Roger Tatley. Dimension: 28cm x 21.5cm "Great photography can give you some insight, but it's just a window you're looking through momentarily." One Second Of Light is a book of photographs by Giles Duley created over the past decade. It's not a retrospective, but rather an anthology of stories, moments that let us glimpse the lives of others. Whilst the photographs are created in places of conflict and disaster, these are not images of victims or events, but rather moments of life and normality, scenes that we can all relate to. They are stories about a shared humanity. "When putting this book together," said Duley, "I became fascinated by the question of time. Most of my images are taken at 1/60 sec or 1/125 second, which means when you put this whole collection together, the reality is they only add up to a second of light. A second that gives insight into other lives, but also makes us question how much we don't see." "I see myself as a storyteller, and this book represents my reflections on the most powerful stories I've been entrusted with."

Giles Duley is the person you would want as a friend to keep you smiling. Full of positive humour and humanity he has that wonderful ability possessed by so many of the top documentary photographers; to sit back and observe, to become almost invisible yet known to his subjects as a friend. Looking at his images, seeing the world through his eyes you begin to share his compassion and his vision. It has taken him long enough to produce this book. Many of us have waited a long time for this but the wait has been worth it. Images full of reverence for the human spirit, pictures that are technically brilliant. This is a book in the great tradition of documentary photography; the work of the masters of black and white photography: Cartier-Bresson and Philip Jones Griffiths; Eugene Smith and Eve Arnold. The narrative is clear, the wealth of detail tells the story and the gentle beauty is beguiling. I have shared this book with fellow photographers and we all agree that it is superb. It shows that in an age of moving images and ubiquitous mobile telephone footage nothing can displace the power of the single photograph. I will no doubt have to wait many more years for Giles's next photo book. But I will be there when it is published. Thank you for restoring my faith in the power of the single human with his/her camera to have an impact

This is a wonderful book compiled over 10 years and is hard to put down. The images are taken with great sensitivity showing some of the world's forgotten people and many still suffering because of war, including the photographer.

Being new to photography having only picked up a camera properly in the last 12 months I have been looking at many photographers work. A good friend told me about Giles work and I started to look through all he has done, straight away I am struck by how he shows another side to things, a side we rarely see. His ability to interact and connect with the people he photographs is clear to see in his work and having been to Afghanistan myself his work from there tells an all too easily forgotten legacy to the years of conflict that the country has endured. For me it is a book full of images that make me want to know more and I found myself staring at the photos and not turning the pages.

Most of all this is a book about stories not just a book of images, it's stories that can otherwise go untold yet every one for me is a story that needs to be told.

Thank heaven for men like Giles Duley. His humanity and courage are limitless. The photographs are heartbreaking, beautiful and honest. Finally the dispossessed, homeless and innocent victims of violence are treated with dignity and compassion. Finally they have a voice through him. And he tells their stories in his captions at the end. And even includes the international charities and NGOs he works with so that the reader too might do some good.
