In typically splashy style, Elton John rushed One Night Only, a document of his two-night Madison Square Garden stand, into release just weeks after the October 2000 shows. Basically a rundown of 30 years of chart hits smoothly played (if occasionally craggily sung), the disc is a solid buy for the Elton John fanatic. Others will have to decide if a plethora of guest stars--Mary J. Blige, Bryan Adams, Kiki Dee, Ronan Keating, and Anastacia--warrants owning new versions of old warhorses. Even without the sense of Event surrounding the performances, though, One Night Only satisfyingly captures the thrill of Sir Elton's recent sets. --Rickey Wright

It's not often that a live collection sounds this good, and all prepared in under a month. Elton is on top form and his guests are extremely strong. These are the same old songs as every other greatest hits package, but are unique versions. Rocket man really stands out here, and is a MUST for any fan. It proves once more that a superstar can survive each decade of new competition and new sounds, collaborating with some of the best along the way. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a rare treat to here, and the band really assist in getting the full vocal and musical range and diversity in these songs.

Sir Elton John - one of the world's greatest rock stars. Madison Square Garden's - one of the world's greatest venues. Live music - one of life's greatest pleasures. And for one night only, all three came together to produce this CD - Greatest Hits Live! Elton John on his own is amazing as anyone who caught him on his most recent UK tour will testify. Elton John with a band is out of this world and so this CD promises to become one of those essential discs that no home can be without. Buy it!

There is a lot to commend this album recorded at New York's Madison Square Garden in 2000; but I do have some criticisms, too.

First , the good stuff; there is a great deal of energy from the atmosphere, provided by a noisy, but respectful, crowd. Without wishing to be pompous, some American audiences do seem to spoil live albums by shouting out, whistling and catcalling which, although trying to add to the atmosphere, just makes the whole listening experience less enjoyable. This crowd is different. Also, the band is excellent - great musicians and very good backing singers. Also, it a very good collection of material.

However, apart from Kiki Dee, the guest artists are disappointing and not worth the novelty of hearing different versions of these tunes. In particular, Ronan Keating is completely inept and the track should have been vanquished to the vaults. The same goes for Mary. J. Blige who is a class act but not on the version of "Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues". It may be the song is in too low a key for her, but it just doesn't suit her voice. It must be said that Elton's voice is a little raspy and he struggles to hit the high notes - but this is where his backing singers help him out so effectively.

So, there you have it. If you want a live Elton album, try and find one where he does all the singing (is there one?). Its an okay album.

I was at Madison Square Garden for the Live recording of this CD and all I can say is GREAT !!! Elton has everything, talent, energy, and style. He didn't stop playing for three hours and we didn't stop singing. His guests, Mary Jay Bligth, Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams and Kiki Dee were every bit as Professional as the master himself.
Please don't retire, not yet, give us one more concert, please, but whatever happens thanks for this great memory

This CD is absolutely essential to anyone with a taste for real music. Elton John has not faded with age, he is a master. His piano playing is perfect and considering this is a live performance, his singing is out of this world. He has such a strong voice and his choice of partners to sing with him is just as exquisite. How did I ever live without this CD?

Recieved this as a gift which takes some of the sting out of it I guess. The show must have been gret to be at but this recording doesn't give much to the listner. I have heard other live versions of Elton and they were far better than this, which left me worried for his voice. And as for the guests least said the better. Don't think i'll be keeping this CD as too much of a let down.
