Product Description

Product Description

Deluxe mediabook featuring Funkadelic's all-time great 1978 album together with a second disc comprising the LP's bonus EP originally released on 7" vinyl Masterminded by the larger-than-life figure of George Clinton, Funkadelic was a key element of his highly influential P-Funk empire. With their unique combination of rock, psychedelia and soul music, Funkadelic crossed over into the pop mainstream and gained an international following, becoming one of the most important groups in the evolution of funk. With their roots in the late 60s, this boundary-defying creative powerhouse was a source of inspiration during the worldwide explosion of rap and hip-hop in the 1980s and 90s. Regarded by many as the greatest funk album of all time, One Nation Under A Groove was recorded at United Sound in Detroit and includes a live track from their concert appearance at the Monroe Civic Center in Louisiana in April 1978. The band's tenth studio album, One Nation... was also their most commercial and its title track spawned an international hit (and a US R&B No.1). Renowned for their wacky, cartoon-inspired artwork this is one of Funkadelic's most memorable and lauded creations. Featuring keyboardist and songwriter Walter "Junie" Morrison, the album also captures Michael Hampton at the pinnacle of his development as a guitarist. Regularly ranked at or near the top of various "best album" lists, One Nation Under A Groove comes complete with a second disc comprising the LP's bonus EP.

'Do you promise to funk, the whole funk and nothing but the funk?' I sure do after hearing this amazing album. As soon as you hear the opening 30 seconds of the title track 'One nation under a groove' you just know its gonna be good. The title track is one of those beatific funk anthems that you never tire of and just have to shake your rump to. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint though. The great thing about the album is the way the songs all fit together without relying on a particular formula. Anyone with just a passing interest in funk should buy this album. In fact anyone with a passing interest in music generally should buy this album. It really is that good.

There is nothing here as outrageously avant-garde or ebullient as Parliament's spectacular Flashlight and in general, this album's subdued tone makes it more soul-funk than rock-funk. Besides the title track on the one nation getting down just for the funk of it, I really love Groovallegiance with its lovely harmonies, interweaving voices, hypnotic melody and the subtle way it insinuates itself into the brain-grooves: "Let me take you by the hand/ And spread the funk across the land/ It's not hard to understand/ Heading for the master plan/ Pledge a groovallegiance to the funk/ The United Funk of Funkadelica/ Oh yea-hoo/ Dey do do do da funk/ Do da funk-de ee de dee!" I love the whole P-funk culture and especially Clinton's playful and witty socio political commentary. Seeing this band, or preferably the whole Parliafunkadelicment-thang live, must have been a memorable experience!

Love this album. First picked it up as an exceedingly cheap import on vinyl years ago (think it was actually 19.5p from Poundstretchers). Perhaps Funkadelic's most accessable album overall. Cover well reproduced, only minor quibble is down to its size the original notes are nigh on impossible to read. Too busy dancing to care too much.

It,s not likely that a band,s tenth studio album will be their best but there can be little argument that the 1978 album One Nation Under A Groove by Funkadelic saw the band reach the pinnacle of their career. A loose concept album about the power of funk to make people happier and more open minded with the added benefit of making then dance like loons on hot coals One Nation Under a Groove is the bands most lauded( rightly) and commercially successful album ( rightly too)
This is the first Funkadelic album to feature keyboard player and songwriter Walter "Junie" Morrison" and his contribution is vital to the albums groovalicious ambience. The album is widely acknowledged as being massively influential , though whether that's always been a good thing is open to debate. Either way it,s not Funkadelic,s fault if second rate copyists latched on to their sound and perspicacious fusion of genres
The album is a heady concoction of glossy P-funk, heavy duty harmonics, scatological socio-political lyrics complete with cross-genre quirks. The title track is the most straight up funk track , an absolute classic of the genre but "Groovallegiance" integrates a a hint of reggae while "Who Says A Funk Band Can,t Play Rock?!" as the title infers is a funk/rock hybrid. The bassline is undiluted funk but the guitars and percussion carry a true rock crunch. The downside of innovation like this is risible copyists like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers who unfortunately become all pervasive. The wonderfully titled "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis" Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)" is a satire comparing the dumbing down of global culture with errr toilets. "Into You" is the albums reflective pause, a virtual R&B ballad , though much better than most R&B ballads.

This record is worth getting simply for the first track. Not only does it have an incredibly cool name, it is remarkably creative - one of those moments which transcend the pop-music genre. The texture is multi-layered, with spoken asides, sung banalities and wonderful cyclic structure. Seriously if you juxtapose this with Laborintus 2 by Luciano Berio it makes a brilliant companion-piece.(A million times better than the other blatant attempt to do so which will remain nameless.(J.McM.)) I can't get into the neutron bomb either, but I can certainly get into this little funk-fest. Talk about the exception to the rule! This proves that even totally dead-end styles can produce miracles.

At long last somebody has had the sense to reissue this Cd,with the full length 12" version of"one Nation Under A Groove !.All previous isues of this album that I have had on CD have only contained the 7mins 26secs album versio and not the full 12" mix.The timing on the CD would indicate that O.N.U.A.G. is a 16 mins version, but is in fact the 12" mix which fades after 11 mins and is then followed by the instrumental.I won't do a full review,as if you a fan you will know this album inside out anyway.Dave Begley
