Oh WOW I just loved The One by John Marrs, he’s already gone on my list of “must read authors” after reading this awesome novel. With a highly original theme and one which intrigued me from the very first page, a cliche I know but I really struggled to put this book down. Forget on line dating services or blind dates, your perfect match is somewhere waiting for you, send a mouth swab off and let the computer find your DNA match. It never fails! or so the blurb would have you believe! But don’t think for one minute this is a love story, mark my words it’s anything but. Everyone knows true love doesn’t run smoothly and John Marrs shows how incredibly twisted and messed up relationships can get even when you think you’ve found your perfect match, unfortunately the DNA test doesn’t take into account human nature, feelings and beliefs.

The One is told in the third person but it follows five very different characters on their journey, to find their one true love. Some of the characters are more complex than others, but each one has an unique story to tell, and I found myself desperate to find out how each of there story’s would evolve. Although the story is told from so many POV the author manages to move from one character to the next fluidly, it took me a few chapters to get used to the constant switching of characters, but once I did I was well and truly hooked. I really loved the way the author made the chapters short and snappy leaving each one on a cliff hanger, for me it just meant I kept promising myself “one more chapter” and before I knew it I had nearly finished this compelling read.

Absolutely mind blowing!!

I loved the prologue of The One. The very idea of finding your perfect match by handing in a sample of your DNA to meet "The One" had me intrigued.

This story got me hooked, especially the last 50% of it. There was so many twists and turns.

I loved reading about all the characters and how they were affected by finding there perfect match.

Just brilliant!

Anyone who loves a good thriller should defiantly get there hands on this, you won't be disappointed.

A certain amount of praise must be awarded to this author for what is certainly an intriguing and unique concept. It is this which kept me reading. Ultimately though the characters are two dimensional and the situations flick between clichéd and far fetched. The biggest crime though is the dialogue. Unrealistic and at times cringeworthy, the characters converse like B movie extras. Disappointing given such a promising concept.

This is the third John Marrs book I've read and hands down my favourite.
With A Thousand Small Explosions he has managed to create an eerily realistic storyline, a selection of great characters and an intriguing plot. The premise of people having a gene that matched them to their soulmate was intriguing - I found myself wondering what I would do if this was really a possibility and seeing the way this played out across the various storylines was a real pleasure. The characters were each well described and I could picture them clearly in my head and grew attached to them easily which for me is always a sign of a good book. My favourite storylines were those of Chris and Nick but they were all equally well developed and the plot lines were great. The book really does have something for everyone! Well done John - another 5 star book!

Wouldn’t it take all the hit-and-miss out of finding love if someone had discovered a gene you could match with your partner? Some has discovered that gene and it leads to people in their millions sending a DNA swab to find their perfect Match. Match Your DNA becomes a multi-million pound business. Matched couples get lower insurance – no suicidal depression, no divorce. Non-matched couples feel insecure and many get tested and then split up. It’s thrown the world of dating into chaos. But once everyone does it, it’s going to be brilliant, isn’t it? Isn’t it? This excellent story takes a closer look at several couples and follows their experiences through the Match Your DNA process. The world of instant love is not a path of rose-petals, it seems. You’re guaranteed a Match – how can it possibly go wrong?

I loved the idea and found myself engrossed in the characters and their stories. They were sufficiently well-drawn and different that it was easy to follow from one to another as the chapters moved forward. The sections were fairly short so the page-turner element really kicked in. I hated leaving one story-line but after the first paragraph of the next, I remembered why I hadn’t wanted to leave this one the last time around. This is the third book of the authors that I’ve read and I think he’s getting better. Imagination and technique go hand in hand here and it’s a very compelling book indeed.

I received a review copy of this book from the author. I have since bought it. It's that good.
