I was going to say this book was in need of a good edit, until I got to the end and found it had three editors, a copy editor and a proof-reader. I don’t understand how some of the misused words (the one I laughed at was when they got him ‘banged to rights’) and Americanisms got past them all. The police wore ‘slickers’, people led a ‘hardscrabble’ existence, lived in the ‘backcountry’ and had ‘home invasion homicides’ (in Sussex).
I found the familiarity between police of different ranks unconvincing - bordering on insubordination - but the author has served in the police so I guess he should know. (Would an inspector really call a subordinate ‘sarge’? Isn’t that just used by the PCs/DCs?)
Too many unlikely (and violent) twists and turns, and the uneven writing made it a very run-of-the-mill thriller and I won’t be looking for more by this author.
The writing, as always, is great and detailed, allowing your mind to fully integrate with the story. Even though this book is of the crime genre, some horror elements shine through- namely the creepy, atmospheric pieces throughout.
The book starts off at a slow pace and i struggled to get into it initially but i stuck with it, and im so glad i did. The slow pace is just laying the start of the mystery. Soon, each chapter is chopping and changing timelines until they both collide and the mystery unravels.
Another top read.
This is a gangster themed tale, with plenty happening-gang warfare, heists, murder, super grasses, blackmail etc. I’ll not rehash the plot as many other reviewers have done that already.
On the whole this is a good read, which I recommend. The ‘sticking points’ for me are the car chases, the descriptions of the insides of buildings (which add nothing) and the flights from danger by various characters (which are sometimes laugh out loud funny)
I haven’t read books by this author before. I will certainly read more.
The start of a new series perhaps?
One of my few favourite authors.
This was a brilliant read, tightly plotted with excellent characterisation. Lynda in particular was a fascinating, well-rounded character and I'd love to read more books featuring her. This was cleverly written in the way in which sympathies were led to particular characters. It was a fast paced thriller which immediately drew me in with an evocative start and which maintained an excellent pace throughout. A real page turner which I would highly recommend.
A bit long winded in parts and dragged a bit.
However it is worth a read so long as your expectations aren’t too high
Do like this author and do prefer stand alone books but this one just gets 3 stars from me.
Wont change your life but will keep you entertained for several hours - great, great read ...,
