Do you remember what you were doing on 15th July this year? Last year? The year before...? The premise of this book is a glimpse of the relationship between Emma and Dexter on the same day every year, from when they meet at graduation from university and onwards through the highs and lows of their lives as they drift apart and together again over and over.

It is beautiful and sweet, painful and embarrassing, uplifting and reassuring... a constant merry-go-round of "what will happen next?" as these young people grow up and try to find their way in a confusing modern world. Despite the year's gap between chapters, it always flowed well and I was constantly pulled along by the current of their lives passing and clashing and complementing.

Reading the reviews here on Amazon and on the cover of the book, I was really excited about reading this book - so what a massive disappointment it's been. The first chapter with it's witty dialogue and sharp observations of life and what it's like to be a twenty something student made the book seem promising, however absolutely nothing changes, no plot develops and the entire book is just waffle. Somewhere during the twenties section I thought maybe I should skip to the thirties which is my age group but to be honest it's no better. I think to enjoy this book you need to be, male and in your twenties and living in London. I say this because the author spends the first two hundred pages concentrating on twenties life in the capital and the only character in the novel that's even vaguely interesting or believable is Dex the male. As the author is a male he clearly has no idea of the female psyche (although some male authors such as Tony Parsons come very close) and that comes through. Unfortunately whilst Dex is a believable character he's shallow, irritating and one-dimensional. Overall an extremely disappointing novel that promised so much and was based on a really interesting premise - two people on the same day over twenty years, but sadly it really doesn't deliver.

AN URGENT APPEAL - CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GENUINELY WELL WRITTEN NOVEL WITH CHARACTERS OF DEPTH AND MEANINGFUL, EXCITING PLOTS? THE LAST BOOK I READ LIKE THAT WAS ANGELS AND DEMONS BY DAN BROWN.

David Nicholls manages to put into words the entire spectrum of emotions between old friends and lovers throughout their university and working lives. A bitter sweet story, told with incredible perspicacity, hilarious ironic wit that makes you laugh out loud. One of the best reads I've ever had and I would highly recommend you spend time with this hugely talented Author who seems to understand every nuance in Life's rich tapestry!!
