Dr Nicole Adenike (Nikki) is a respected trauma surgeon, a commanding force in the operating room with a secret wish to be totally submissive in her bedroom. Drawn to a particular website which advertises dominant men, she responds to Richard's advert and begins to reveal her dark sexual secrets to him, desires she has never before expressed to anyone, including her best friend, a millionairess psychic named Kim. Over the course of the month she develops feelings for Richard, and taking courage she agrees to finally meet him in person - after his police check comes back fine of course (smart lass!).

Richard is unfortunately not ther Master in Shining Armour Nikki is looking for. Dubbed Lucifer by the police, he is a clever man who over the last nine years has brutally violated and murdered highly career minded professional women. Each crime scene is the same, with the victim seemingly willingly tied up before being tortured, sometimes for days. It is not until Nikki escapes from Lucifer with the help of Kim who foresaw the attack in a vision that Detective Thomas Cavanah finally gets a lead on the case. He has been a ruthlessly obssessed individual since Lucifer murdered his beloved Amy nearly nine years ago and wants nothing more than to see this psycho dead. As part of his investigation, Thomas has access to all the steamy emails exchanged between Nikki and Richard and finds himself in an intense state of arousal and jealousy. Having wanted Nikki for himself since meeting her, he is exactly the dominating sort of man Nikki secretly longs for. As both struggle to accept their growing feelings for each other, tensions are strained as Lucifer continues to contact Nikki and taunt Thomas with further murders.

This is another great contemporary novel by JB.

I'm not going to outline the plot, as a fellow reader of One Dark Night as already done so brilliantly.
I just need to put across my experience while reading this fantastic novel.
Having never read anything from Jaid Black before, I didn't have any expectation as to what this novel would entail. When I say I was consumed in this story...I actually mean exactly that!
I read this book from 9pm untill 2am (long time I know, but I read sloooow)...I just couldn't put the book down!
Jaid creates the story so well and I become engrossed in Nikki's tale...and as for the sexual chemistry from the word Go between Nikki and Detective Cavanah!!! The sex encouters are constructed amazingly! I'm just waitin to meet my own Thomas Cavanah!!!!
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I will continue to read more from this author. A great balance between sex, disturbing fantasies of Lucifer and rekindling of relationships...I thoroughly recommend this book to everyone!!

An applause to the Author Ms Black. This book is magnificent, very clever twist and turns, suspense, thriller, and sexy all in one package. I cannot put this book down until the end. Clearly, Jaid Black has labeled herself the queen of BDSM novels. The best books I have ever read. I would definitely recommend this book!!!an excellent read.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Daddy?" No. 2 Dec. 2013
By J. Finn - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I didn't enjoy this book. My issues were:
1. She kept calling him "Daddy" and he called her his "little girl" while they were having sex. I found this INCREDIBLY disturbing! Maybe this is what all Dom/Subs call each other? I don't know.
2. They never kissed. In the whole book. At the very end, he gives her a quick peck. That's it. They do a lot of other stuff... just no kissing.
3. Improbable ending. It didn't really make a whole lot of sense.

This may sound stupid, but other than that, the book wasn't bad. Those 3 things really ruined it for me (the first 2 more than the improbable ending). Was looking forward to reading the sexy scenes, and ended up having to skim them because "Daddy" jarred me right out of any sexy feelings. Yikes!
4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised 2 April 2016

I was NOT expecting this from this author. Although I don't read a lot of JB, what I've read were a lot of steamy, very explicit sexual books. This was so far from that and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not into the BDSM scene and rarely read books containing this type of play, but this wasn't bad at all. I wasn't expecting to be so captivated by the story plot. It truly was suspenseful, well designed in it's characters and quite frankly I was just reading it for the story more so than the sex. She took me for a spin with the "whodunnit" and I loved that. it was just nice thinking... "wait, is THAT the killer? or is it this guy?" If you're looking for a book with constant sex, this isn't it. The scenes that did have them were steamy (and yeah, I can say I'm not fond of the phrase "daddy" either but thankfully it wasn't used a lot) but they were not as numerous and overpowering to the point where the story itself is lost, as some of her other books. I liked the characters and felt they were written well. Overall, a definitely entertaining read.
4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me turning the pages... 26 Oct. 2010

This was the first contemporary romance erotica(with a little suspense in the mix) that I read by Jaid Black and it won't be my last. I am already hooked on her Lost in Trek series and was glad to find this book. I am picky about reading books with Dom or Dominant male themes and this fit what I was looking for in a story. This theme in the book is not the main focus and it is not too heavy.

I really liked the relationship between Nikki and Thomas. He was a cop dealing with the horrors of the case and personal stuff. She was a talented doctor who felt she was missing something in her personal life. This leads her to the internet and the book unfolds from there. I liked the pace of the book and the action helped. Also I must add that I liked her best girlfriend Kim and thought her addition to the story was just right. I will search out more contemporary stories by Jaid Black to add to my bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent romantic suspense. The best part is the fun chemistry between the couple and a couple of hot sex scenes. 2 April 2008

Nikki is a surgeon who secretly fantasizes about being tied up and servicing her master. This is not BDSM with pain. This is tie me up sex (Dom/sub) - and only in the bedroom. Nikki has always wanted to try it but never did until now. At age 34 she puts an ad on a Dom/sub website. Richard responds and they begin intimate emails.

A serial killer has been raping and murdering women. Thomas is the homicide detective on the case. He meets Nikki when she reports something at the police station. He next sees her at the grocery store when they tangle over the last box of pistachio nuts.

This is what I want when I say "spark between the couple." Thomas and Nikki have clever dialogue and fun lines. Some of this was arguing over pistachio nuts. Also their first two sex scenes were hot and sexy. I loved the scene when Thomas first asked to be her Dom. It was the only time he appeared vulnerable. His personality is surly and grouchy. She's not offended by it.

The suspense part of the story is well done. No one does anything stupid. Conflicts are well done.

For sensitive readers: There is knife torture and rape, but they are mostly referred to after the fact. The reader doesn't live through them. Some torture/rape scenes (by other authors) have stayed with me and troubled me afterwards. These did not do that.

This was a reread for me. I read it in 2007 and 2012. Jaid Black is one of my favorite authors. Most of her writing is erotic romance.

Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 313 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: about nine, several of them short fantasies or ponderings. Setting: current day Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio. Copyright: 2004. Genre: erotic romantic suspense.

I've reviewed the following Jaid Black books. (Anthology title is in parentheses.) Some of the anthology short stories are also published individually. Dates are copyright dates.

This is such a great book, that I look forward to going back and reading this story again and I am impatient to read the rest of the books by this author. Hot, Hot, Hot, love scenes, a well written, creative and intriguing story, plus inventive, vivid characters, added on top of seriously sexy romance. It's all combined into this fantastic story and makes this book a "must-have"!!!! I didn't want to set it down....seriously, I was falling asleep over this book in the early hours of the morning!! Lol
