Even though this wasn't my favourite book of hers, I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics of Alex and Dawn's story. It wasn't rushed or even portrayed as being an easy, all consuming love story but one that teetered precariously with unsurety and caution.
The allure of an outsider hiding within the shadows calls to our heroine as she sees the best in what the gossiping small town locals regard as a strange lost cause.
Dawn is a vet and a single mother who is trying to make the best of a rather difficult situation. Estranged from her sister due to a past indiscretion which resulted in her daughter, Katie, Dawn has been the focus of local gossip more than she can count, so when a stranger enters the town and is shunned by the locals, she can't help but be intrigued.
Alex is a recluse. Renovating an old log cabin in the woods, with only his best canine friend Stan for company, his severe stutter keeps others at a distance as his level of communication with strangers proves difficult.
When Stan requires a vet, Alex has no choice but to go into town and get him some help which is where our story starts as two guarded characters find a friendship and connection in one another.
There were times when I wanted Dawn to open up a little more and take a chance, but her guarded persona was justified in her circumstances. I did find it a little difficult to connect with her at times, she was all very normal.
I liked Alex, he had a dark air about him and it was fascinating to see him starting to fight that darkness and come out of his shell.
Katie was adorable and her energy gave good balance to the story. Her innocence and honesty was a breath of fresh air.
Stan is the man! I loved that mutt. He was a fundamental part of the story and even had his own voice in a chapter or two. It was fitting to the backdrop of the darker twist towards the end of the book and I commend Jane on touching on a despicable and upsetting subject. It was hard to read but I will never dismiss a raise of awareness. Very brave.
Ahh, Stan friendly, sweet and loving dog who had an infinity for Alex, they had an unbreakable bond, a great relationship. He was such a sweetie.
I loved how Stan and Alex were. The love of a dog is definitly an unconditional bond. They would lay their life down for you without a 2nd thought.
It was really hard, reading the part when Stan was ready, we had to make that same decision last year, so it brought back bittersweet memories.
I really liked Alex, he was a very thoughtful guy, with a ton of love to give and share, he was compassionate with a back story that some considered bad news, but sometimes our history helps to define our future self. I would be very honoured to know someone like Alex for real.
Dawn, also a lovely lady kind and also compassionate but kept herself very guarded after being hurt before. She was also very wary to venture to find her own happiness, because she had Katie to consider. Kids have an honest innocence and have a way of making adults see the truth from a different perspective.
Loved Stella, a very strong character, but totally a kindpin wihtin the sory, I'm glad that her, Dawn and Alex were able to overcome their own insecurities to form a very strong unit.
Now whilst this is a book of fiction, all the elements are very real life situations which as a reader, it made me think about the situatins under a different view point, and whilst I'm very happy in my life there are always ways to make things better.
Thanks Jane, I loved this book, the love story was heartfelt and not a typical boy meet firl type of story, I loved the twists and turns of their story, understanding that love is multi faceted.
I won this book as an Arc, here is my honest review.
