HASH(0x91bcd2c4) out of 5 stars 25-Page Novella, A Bit Unsatisfying 26 Feb. 2012
By Muggle-Born - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I picked up ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT by Jennifer Haymore from NetGalley because I thought it was a good way to introduce myself to a romance author I was not familiar with.

I thought that almost fifty pages of ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT would introduce me to Haymore's writing as well as give a taste of what her series would be like.

The story focuses on sisters Serena and Olivia. For Serena, this ball is important because seven years ago, it was the ball that had damaged her reputation. For Olivia, this was her first outing of the Season and she was determined to keep up her family's reputation. I thought Serena's story to be quite pointless, but it did make me interested in her story. On the other hand, Olivia's chapter was quite scandalous.

Now my problem with ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT is basically false advertising. I thought I would get around 50 pages of romance goodness. I got less than 30. The other half of this "novella" was an excerpt from the first Donovan Sisters novel by Jennifer Haymore. What? Yeah. Talk about disappointing.

I understand that ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT is a novella, but it failed to leave me with any kind of satisfaction as a reader. I am interested in Serena's story and eventually, I may pick up the first Donovan sisters novel, but overall, ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT was a let down.

But if I were to have purchased this novella just to try out a new author, I would have been severely disappointed. I rather would have read the first book of the Donovan Sisters series to see if I liked Haymore's writing than to have been let down just after a measley 25 or so pages.

HASH(0x91bcd3b4) out of 5 stars Not a story 5 May 2012
By Love reading - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This 'story' is little more than half of the book. Teasers from other books comprise the remainder of the book. This story was four short chapters with no real story. Perhaps this would have worked as a teaser or opening chapters of a story. As is, it's incomplete.

HASH(0x917822b8) out of 5 stars So Confused.... 18 April 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
from beginning to end I was so terribly confused!! I have no idea what or whom I was supposed to be reading about here. All the scenes kept leading up to something.... that never happened nor was there any conclusion.

A waste of time for me personally.
HASH(0x91782474) out of 5 stars too short but piqued my interest 26 Mar. 2013
By T. Lam - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This novella was a lot shorter than I thought it was going to be. Reading it on my Kindle, it ended at about 50%, with the other half being the first chapter of Confessions of an Improper Bride (first book in the series). I feels much more like the epilogue to the first book or the prologue to the second book in the series than a full novella.

Though I wished it were longer, I did enjoy this brief glimpse into the Donovan Sister series. Serena and Jonathan were a wonderful couple. It was clear that they had gone through a lot to be together and their love for each other was very sweet. Serena's younger sister Olivia is innocent in the ways of London society and has a brief run in with a rake. Olivia was pretty bland in this. I think it has more to do with the brevity of the piece than an actual problem with Olivia herself. She has the potential to be an interesting character but she doesn't get a chance to shine in this short piece.

Once Upon A Wicked Night is more of a teaser than a novella. If the intention was to pique my interest in the Donovan Sisters series, it definitely worked. However, as a standalone story it's too short and does not give you enough to be a truly satisfying read. I received my copy free from NetGalley in exchange for a review but I would have been annoyed had I paid for it. It would serve its purpose better as a free read on the author's website. That way, fans of the series can get an epilogue to James and Serena's story and new readers can read it and decide if this is a series they'd be interested in. The actual "story" of this book is 2 stars for me but I am giving it 3 stars because it was enough to make me want to read this series. I would recommend skipping this and jumping in with the first book. Yes, it costs more but you will be getting much more for your money.

*I received this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This, in no way, affected my opinion or review of this book.

HASH(0x91bcd918) out of 5 stars What happened between book 1 and book 2 3 May 2012
By akb--bookworm - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
When I read a short story, I expect a short STORY complete with plot, purpose, characters, and development. Although well written, this "story" is just a written account of what happened between books Confessions of an Improper Bride (A Donovan Novel) and Secrets of An Accidental Duchess (A Donovan Novel) without any real plot or purpose except to show us what happened off page. We already are told the important details of this "story" in book 2, so we don't really learn anything new.

This type of off-scene story is best done as a freebie posted on the author's website for rabid fans, as it isn't a fleshed out story but rather a "bridge" between books. This story is the scene where the Marquis of Fenwicke tries to seduce Olivia, which is the catalyst for events in book 2. We also see Serena's (book 1) first return to the place where she was discovered in a compromising position.

If you haven't read either of these books, this story will hold no interest for you.

Confessions of an Improper Bride (A Donovan Novel)
ONCE UPON A WICKED NIGHT -- Donovan Sisters 1.5
Secrets of An Accidental Duchess (A Donovan Novel)
