There have been a couple of other official Greenpeace histories published, and while both are excellent neither one gets as intimate about this crucial first campaign. Jackson get the quotes and this story and the feel of things; the reader feels transported not only to the North Pacific ocean but also to 1975, what the world was like back then. It is simply amazing that this cast of lovable characters were able to accomplish what they set out to do. It's a seagoing drama of the highest order. James Cameron should have made THIS movie instead of that other ( ill-fated ) seagoing flick!
But one huge difference would be, of course, that Greenpeace in 1975 succeeded way beyond what they imagined. Greenpeace today is a huge multi-national environmental corporation. It shares the Greenpeace name with the crew of Will Jackson's boat, but that's about all. The men and women of this original and pioneering effort to save the whales are my heroes. They began by having a singular passion: to stop the slaughter of whales. How to do it? They pretty much made it up as they went along. They had to, because nobody else had ever imagined, much less attempted, how to accomplish this. And in this book all the characters come alive, in all their glories and, well, in-glories. They were humans after all, pretty much like me, like you, like all of us. A great read, a priceless chronicle of one of the world's Great Events. Save The Whales started right here. And if there are still any whales on the planet in a hundred years, well, their salvation began in the story of this wonderful book.
