She's a mortal cursed with dark power...
After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: a terrifying ability to channel electricity and to see a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...
He's the Prince of Night...
Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites, threatening to consume them. It will take everything they have to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

We learned very little about Vlad's background - how he'd started off and what he'd become; I mean, the guy is the stuff of legends, has been around for 6 centuries, yet he came across as bland...and almost a bit of a eunuch. Leila herself was described as scarred and destroyed, but all we heard about really was her 'power' and her beauty. I couldn't see the supposed attraction between them, and have to wonder if the author, who is normally great, set this book up so that we're forced to read the next to find out what happens. The duology has to end in a HEA, that's a given with her, but this one did make me think that she'd written it not out of love for the character, but for monetary reasons. Vlad has been such a shadowy figure for so long, yet in this one, he almost seemed...boring. Also, I couldn't help but see some similarities between this and Christine Feehan's Carpathians series...enemies that don't truly die, homes carved out of caves, flying...
Even the love scenes, few that there were, were tame. I suppose, as 'filler' until the next C&B tale is out, it was OK-ish, but thank goodness for the resale value of paperbacks (vs Kindle), as this is not a Keeper.
Having said all that I did enjoy it despite my gripes, its a good addition to the set and will definitely read the next one.
Vlad is sexy and magnetic etc however I wouldn't want to be caught dead in a castle with but HE IS Vlad Tepesh after all.His extreme ruthlessness and not listening to Leila half the time took from him as a Romantic protagonist and his arrogance and presumption when it comes to woman was as Leila stated, chauvinistic.
However the wit and comedy in the story made me flip the next page and anxious to find put what happens next in Vlad and Leila's future.
Thoroughly enjoyable. I can't really single out any part that I enjoyed more - I loved the whole thing, start to finish. Vlad is magnificent - at last, a proper vampire. I loved his reaction to Hollywood vampires - and I agree wholeheartedly! Vlad is certainly no angst-ridden specimen bemoaning his lost humanity. He's real, flawed, intriguing, dangerous - and sexy as Hell!
I cannot wait for part 2.

I can keep reading it again and again with the same enjoyment each time. I love how ruthless Vlad is and the fact he is this way throughout instead of changing who he is. Read morePublished 11 months ago by Amazon Customer
