I generally enjoyed the story, but I have two main complaints. One, it felt like there were four main story lines that ran parallel but never really intersected. There was Alexa and Arys' situation. There was her and Shaz's budding romance. There was her night job with Veryl and there was the whole mystery with Raoul. Any one of them probably could have been a book on its own. Well, maybe the love triangle would need to be combined, but you know what I'm getting at. The Raoul situation seemed to be the main storyline, so any time Alexa ran off to fight a random demon or psychotic ex-lover I found it distracting. It essentially felt like it had nothing to do with the rest of the plot. Plus the events required the introduction of random characters who then simply disappeared, Lilith for example.
Two, there was a lot of presumed knowledge. Alexas is described as a werewolf with extra, vampireish abilities. But these are never really described. I have no idea which of her powers were the unusual ones or why she had them. Similarly, I never really understood her and Arys' metaphysical draw. I certainly understood the effect, but not the why, how, or even what of it. I would have really liked a more in-depth description.
I did enjoy it. Don't get me wrong. There were just a few things that niggled at me. I have the prequels to read and will consider continuing the series.
I liked the book, but I wanted to love it. I may read others in this series to see the progression in the future.
There are other problems too - alexa also loves Shaz. a fellow werewolf who is very understanding about her being drawn despite herself to Arys. They're both hunks - just what we need in this sort of stroy. there are fellow vampires and werewolves all with their own sets of problems that fit well into this story. then there werewolf Alpha Raoul - who seems to be being framed for a series of murders of his exlovers, and asks Alexas helps to get him out of the mess. As an ex herslef this puts alexa in the spotlight - something Shaz and Arys are both unhappy about.
its a great stroy - well writtne, full of characters you can feel are real and stroylines that keep you riveted to find out what happens. Of course being the first in a series there are tempters to later staorylines incluced and I was so gripped i've bout all the sereis so far - dying to find out what happens next so I hope Trina is wrting madly as i type! the books are all well edited and of a good length and will keep you engrossed for several hours - they're not lightweight fluff but the type to get stuck inot and lose yourself for a while. i've reread them all again and on second reading where i know some of whats coming i enjoyed them even more. sometimes i'm so keen to see what happens i don't take in all that goes on and this sereis has so much happening - not just one main plots but lots of sub plots too that its easy to re read and still feel gripped.
Excellent vaue for money and ideal for those who love supernatural romance with a bit of a kick.
