With the BF212, it couldn't be simpler to check your body fat, weight and BMI to gain a complete overview of your body composition and to keep track of it over time.
What is Body Fat?
Our bodies need a certain amount of fat to function effectively, but too much fat can have a detrimental effect to your overall health. Studies have shown that a high level of fat in the body, in particular visceral fat, increases the risk of developing more serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The level of body fat you should have will vary depending on age and sex; this chart indicates what level band you should be in depending on these factors.
The Omron BF212 body composition monitor offers the most comprehensive tracking system in a safe, sleek design. Measuring up to a maximum 150 kg (330 lb / 23 st), this monitor provides detailed information on body mass index, and body fat. Lightweight (1.3 kg) and slimline, the BF214 includes smart design features such as 4-sensor and auto-off technology, and comes packed ready with batteries so you can start tracking straight away. With today's obsession with fitness there are several products on the market providing data .Some are simply scales with a fat / water monitor system tacked on, others claim to be fitness tools.
Body fat and water can be medically measured via electrical resistance to microcurrents (BIA - Bioelectric analysis) sent via the body extremities such as the feet BUT most such devices, using only the feet as contacts, only measure the body fat/water across the legs / lower torso.
I had previously (Feb 2013) bought a set of Salter electronic scales/body analyser and was getting odd fat / water results. I could not be sure if this was simply because I was diabetic - the Salter suppliers were totally unhelpful in resolving this.
I decided to try the Omron offering as part of the Amazon Vine programme
These Omron scales provide weight (up to 23 stone), BMI and % body fat for up to 4 people
Set up instructions are Multilanguage and reasonably clear. The unit is powered by 4 x AAA batteries ( included) (The manual is also downloadable from the Omron site)
There is minimal (zero) background information on the principles (and limitations) of body fat measurement by electric microcurrent - surprising given the product is called a composition monitor. There are , however , tables from the academic literature of expected fat levels by sex and age.
The product is best used on a hard floor if any accuracy is expected in the weight - (thick) carpets swallow the feet. It is a neat ( some might say small) unit with 4 electrodes to stand on. You can set it up in metric ( cm , kg) or imperial inch/lb or inch/st/lb.
Set up involves selecting one of 4 "P" settings then inputting age, sex, height.Read more ›
They are very small, and I do wonder if some people may have issues balancing on them. My feet are fairly small (it's not true what they say) and even the overlap the end when standing on the scales. However, I think the small size is great, as it limits the space they take up.
It would be great if they tracked how your measurements had changed from day to day, but scales that do that (often with companion apps and/or websites) tend to cost a lot more.
The one thing I dislike is that there seems to be no way to switch users, or re-do your measurements, without switching the scales off and on again.
It may be due to the above reason, or because I have vinyl flooring (also tried on carpet with worse results) but the scale does not accurately measure my weight. On vinyl, it is about 3kg under, and on carpet about 5kg.
The body fat function again was inaccurate, compared to a skin caliper test and similar scale made by Tanita - off by 6% on both. Again I believe this is due to the shortness of the product.
Other than those issues though, the unit is very well made, sturdy, and easy to use. The touch buttons work very well, and if you haven't got hobbit feet you'll be very happy with your purchase.
Edit: I did some further testing, it seemed that depending what surface the scales were placed on, it would give a different body weight and different fat value. In the manual it says the scales use a combination of impedance and BMI data to calculate fat %. It would seem the issue lies in their calculation method, and therefore does not apply to anyone outside of the "average" body category. I don't consider myself to be athletic, but I lift weights and have about 16% bodyfat despite being at the upper limits of normal BMI.
I also decided to test it with socks on, because I thought something strange was going on, and low and behold I got the exact same body fat measurements on three different surfaces with and without socks.
Compared to a Tanita scale I used to own, this one is highly deceptive in the way it works, factoring the majority of fat % calculation on BMI rather than impedance. I ordered a larger Omron model (215) to replace this one, and will test to see if similar things occur with that one. If they do, I'll definitely be going back to the more expensive, yet functionally accurate Tanita scales.
