Manufacturer's Description
The Olympus XZ-1: Introducing a new breed of DSLR-quality compact
Top quality 4x wide-angle iZUIKO DIGITAL lensClick here for a larger image
Building on the success of the Micro Four Thirds format and its popular PEN series, Olympus has once again torn up the rulebook and launched a game changer in its XZ-1 flagship compact.
Ideal for photo enthusiasts and professionals looking for a second back-up camera, the XZ-1 promises consistently clear pictures up to digital SLR standard, even in low light.
It achieves this courtesy of three category-defying features: an X-tremely large super-sensitive 1/1.63-inch 10 megapixel CCD sensor, X-tremely swift TruePic V image processor, plus X-tremely bright 1:1.8-2.5 i.ZUIKO DIGITAL lens.
It’s also the first Olympus compact to come equipped with a ZUIKO lens, previously only available with DSLRs, and is also very portable, being not much larger than the average smartphone, so it slips easily into any pocket.
Extensive compatibility with ever expanding accessory range
Furthermore, the XZ-1 with built in Accessory Port is compatible with the ever growing range of Olympus PEN digital camera accessories.
To boost the quality of photos and video further, users can add an external flash or electronic viewfinder (EVF) – with more accessories added to the range all the time.

Big and bright OLED screen
The Olympus XZ-1 offers a large and supremely clear 3-inch, 610,000 dot resolution OLED screen for framing and reviewing your photos. This means that sharing shots on the spot with family and friends is not only a possibility but also a real pleasure.
Alternatively the XZ-1 also features HDMI output enabling images to be viewed on a big screen TV or monitor.
Top class features, top quality 4x wide-angle iZUIKO DIGITAL lens
Few cameras of any shape, size or system can hold a candle to the High Definition video or beautiful still photos the XZ-1 delivers thanks to the unique combination of larger sensor, Olympus lens and processor.
The iZUIKO DIGITAL lens ensures a pure supply of light with reduced ghosting and flaring. It’s also a capably versatile tool, allowing the user to take in everything from 1cm macro close ups to sweeping landscapes, and switch from intimate portraits to group shots, offering a focal range equivalent to 28-112mm in 35mm terms.
Another feature in common with digital SLRs is that Olympus XZ-1 users can reduce depth of field in their images to keep close subjects sharp whilst leaving the background attractively blurred.
X-cellent performer in low light, or bright light
The Olympus’ XZ-1 combination of properties ensures that images stay sharp from corner to corner and even in low light. In comparison with a regular 14 megapixel CCD sensor, the light receptive area of each pixel on the Olympus’ is twice as large.
So for those who want to take low light images without having to use flash, the marriage of ultra bright lens, dual image stabilization, high ISO6400 sensitivity, and AF illuminator to facilitate focusing in dark conditions, ensures the XZ-1 is more than up to the task.
It’s not just a creature of the night, however. Even with its bright lens, in bright conditions one of the fastest shutter speeds available on a compact camera of 1/4000 sec reduces the risk of over exposure, even when shooting in snow, sunlight – or when utilising the flash.
Digital Image StabilisationClick here for a larger image
Hands on operation for X-treme creativity
Artistic impulses are given free reign with the XZ-1, thanks to hands on features such as the front lens control ring and menu wheel affording pro-style levels of access to a full complement of manual shooting modes – Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual – plus special options including RAW shooting, multi aspect ratios (16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 6:6), bracketing control and six Art Filters digital effects.
Factor in super macro mode, wireless flash control and high speed AF tracking, and compact users looking to up their photographic game have found a strong ally in the XZ-1.
720p High Definition movie capability
In the XZ-1’s High Def movie mode the camera captures video using the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1280x720 pixels and a rate of 30 frames per second.
Dual Image Stabilisation
A bugbear of all cameras is the propensity for camera shake at longer focal lengths, when shooting handheld or in lower lighting conditions. Olympus therefore offers not one but two means of reducing the potentially damaging effects of image blur.
As a further help, light sensitivity settings up to ISO6400 are also manually selectable. Alternatively, turn on the built-in flash.

Creative Magic: Six Art Filters
Turn your memories into works of art. A choice of six Art Filters are available to instantly give both your images and movies a unique look and feel. Just select the desired Art Filter before taking a picture or shooting a movie, the effect is then shown directly on the LCD.
Dramatic Tone: Boosts the contrast to give images visual punch and a more dynamic atmosphere. This filter is accessible whether shooting stills or movies.
Diorama: This lends images a miniature model village feel by narrowing depth of field and enhancing colour and contrast.
Pop Art: Enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid to create high-impact pictures in the style of Pop Art.
Soft Focus: Creates a soft tone, which gives pictures an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere without obscuring details such as hair or flower petals.
Grainy Film: Recreates the effect of grainy, high-contrast monochrome pictures. The strong presence and dramatic atmosphere amplify the impact of the subject.
Pin Hole: Reduces the peripheral brightness like an image seen through a pinhole camera. Added to this is a unique colour tone and the results have an air of secrecy or otherworldliness.
High capacity SDXC card compatible
The XZ-1 further takes the worry out of photography and offers almost unlimited memory expansion possibilities by providing compatibility with the new SDXC removable media card format (as well as SD and SDHC).
This affords high storage capacities of up to a gargantuan 2TB to ensure you don’t run out of space for those many thousands of photos and videos at an inopportune moment – thereby making the camera as ‘future proof’ as possible.
Effortless shooting via inspirational Live Guide
In order to achieve results like the professionals with the minimum of effort, the XZ-1 takes inspiration from the PEN series in featuring Olympus’ revolutionary Live Guide, allowing photographers to watch in real time the results of changing functions and settings before even taking a shot.
The Olympus XZ-1 is available in matt black or white lacquered body.

It can take a few tries in manual to get the photo you want but I enjoy using the many camera features and settings this camera has in auto as well as manual mode.
The oled screen is very bright and clear, making your photo's look amazing on screen with very good viewing angles and in direct sun light.
I added a flipbac grip to the camera which make's the camera much easier to hold with one hand.
I tried a class 10 sd memory card and found write time's took a long time to save so I bought a San disk extreme 16gb 45mb/s memory card, which works perfectly with the camera.
it come's with a high quality Olympus branded neck strap but no case, so you will definitely have to get a case to protect it from the odd bump every now and again. In this case, I went with a case logic case as opposed to the official case for the XZ-1 as I was more on a budget.
PROS
Has excellent build quality.
Great image quality.
f/1.8 lens.
4x optical zoom.
Lots of settings to play with.
OLED Screen.
CONS
No automatic lens cover, instead it has a cover, which can be attached to a string to the camera body so you don't lose it. You Auto Self Retaining Open Close Lens Cap Black but this does add to the bulk.
It can bulky if you are looking for something slim and light possible look at the Casio exilim range.

However, this is not a camera for impatient and/or hyperactive people - its "reactions" to commands are noticably slow compared to what one has got used to in present-day models. So, if you can't wait a second or two, it's not for you.
I am upgrading from a Canon P&S, so my expectations may be lower than digital SLR users. Nevertheless I have found image quality to be fantastic. In contrast to some reviewers I have found the macro mode to be superb; the lens really plays a part here generating lovely out of focus backgrounds. If you like photographing flowers and plants, this is the camera for you. Not found much use for the super macro mode, in fact I got the camera lens covered in pollen the first time I used it- doh!!!! There are some caveats to the image quality opinion (see below).
I have been pleased with the colours and sharpness of the pictures of landscapes and people. In program or I- auto mode the camera can be used as a P&S, but having the flexibility of aperture or shutter priority for those "creative" moments is great. In fact there many ways to tweak photos in the camera. I had fun with the dramatic tone and black and white art filters, and creating a decent panorama was also easy. No issues so far with the quality of jpg images as discussed widely in the forums. Most of my working day is spent on a computer, so I would prefer not to spend more time messing around with raw files.
Now for the cons (mostly minor).
1. Like many new cameras, the printed manual is cursory and a multilingual waste of paper. This camera has so many functions, that reading the full PDF manual is essential. It's not Fifty shades of grey, but will help your relationship with this camera. I have found the Dpreviews Olympus forum to be a great source of advice.
2. The supplied lens cap is a bit clumsy. Even though it is supposed to fall off when you power up the camera, the cap has stayed perched on the lens a few times. The inside of the cap has hard plastic protrusions, so there is the potential to damage the lens surface. That said, I have not seen any reports of this on the internet, so perhaps I am worrying unecessarily. Of course there are fancy lens caps available to get round this, but I resent having to pay extra.
3. High ISO quality (800 or above) is poor as widely discussed in other reviews. However the camera OS is quite aggressive about keeping you down to low ISO on the auto settings.
4. Related to #3, low light photos taken on Program mode without flash appear better on my old P&S. On further investigation, this was because the P&S had increased ISO to 800, and had better exposure. The same scene on the XZ-1 (400 ISO) was more detailed, sharper and less noisy, but underexposed. It seems the XZ-1 is not good at metering indoor scenes with the default evaluative metering setting. You can get round this easily by either switching to centre weighted metering or by increasing exposure compensation to +0.7Ev (easily done with the little dial on the back).
5. Menu system is not intuitive and takes some delving to get some settings eg Enabling macro requires 3 or 4 presses on the little buttons.
6. Handling still feels a bit awkward because the camera (justifiably) is weighted around the big lens. The thumb grip on the right hand side of back helps, but I frequently switch to display mode by accident when I am taking pictures. I think that adding an extra grip on the front will help. But again more money!
7. I don't like the neckstrap, I don't think the camera size warrants it. Olympus should have included a wrist strap.
Overall I am very happy with the camera. It has far better image quality than my old camera, and provides me with lots of options to be creative. For travelling, it's a good compromise between a compact P&S and a bulky D-SLR. Now I just need to get a decent case, so that I can take it somewhere sunny!
The user interface is different to all of the previous Olympus cameras I own. It is, I am told, more like a DSLR in that respect.
It's easy to use with just a little help from the manual. The Art filters make life fun and they are simplicity itself to use. I've tried the manual controls and they are also easy to understand and use.
We do live in amazing times. Olympus have produced a winner with this camera but they don't sit on their laurels ... Already the XZ-2 is available.
Worth every penny I paid for it and more.
If you are interested in simple, easy , but good photography then this camera supplies in abundance. I'd recommend to all.

Ok, here are my 'cut to the chase' raw comments from a non-professional. The bright colours in the picture shine through and the flash does not seem to over expose the picture. The pictures look 'clear' and vibrant. They seem so realistic.
If you want a camera that takes a very decent photo with little or no effort, then buy it.
If you are a professional photographer, I think you have more than I will ever know about cameras to keep you happy.
It's just brill!
The only downside - don't rely on buying it for a super zoom lens. It does zoom in a little but not of any great significance.
