Olympus WS-811: Ultra smart stereo audio recorder and MP3 player for those who really want their words to shine

With its super stylish finish, ultra slim body and lightweight build, the Olympus WS-811 audio recorder is as ready for the catwalk as it is that boardroom meeting.
It is not merely a pretty fascia however; the WS-811 records and plays back high quality WMA plus widely popular MP3 audio files. And this from an entry-level business device!
High sensitivity stereo sound is also provided on this model for recording personal notes, meetings and conversations, delivered courtesy of built-in stereo microphones. Boosting performance further are Voice Filter and Noise Cancel features. All ‘WS’ series models feature a music player, plus Calendar Search, Scene Select, and Index Marks features for quickly finding and retrieving a potentially large number of audio files.
As if that wasn’t enough the WS-811 offers convenience in spades, particularly with regard to downloading audio to your PC or Mac, and sharing it via email, for which swift USB connectivity is provided via a handy retractable USB connector. This model also features a microSD card slot, offering the potential for an extra 32GB worth of storage.
Add in voice activated recording too, with a low cut filter cutting down on extraneous noise when recording – and the process of using the Olympus WS-811 is literally as simple as speak, record, transfer.

Built in Direct USB Connection for the ultimate in connivence
Messy cables are a thing of the past, as the Olympus WS-811 can connect directly with your home or office PC via its built-in connector 'arm'. The fact that it also comes with a slot for an optional microSD card slot also means that there is that much more flexibility for downloading files from one device to another.
2GB internal memory for more than 500 hours recording, PLUS microSD card expansion slot
An ample 500 hours of recording time is offered by the WS-811 in LP mode thanks to its expansive 2GB internal memory. The fact that the recorder has a slot for an optional microSD card means that the capacity can be expanded to an additional degree, dictated by the size of the card inserted, with up to 32GB supported.
Thanks to 99 index marks, important sections of a recording can also be earmarked for easier retrieval and playback.
'Best ever' sound via newly developed high sensitivity low noise directional microphones
Improvements to the WS-811's built-in microphones, made through Wolfson high performance codecs and Olympus' accumulated analogue circuit technologies, have delivered what we believe to be the 'best ever' quality in sound recording. The result is that voices can be recorded with a clarity bordering on the profound. What's more, with this model stereo earphones are provided out of the box.
Gain optimum recording quality via Scene Select options
By selecting from the recording menu, the WS-811 further allows optimum recording settings to be set according to 'scenes' – for example a business meeting, conference, voice memo and so forth. With five modes and three user configurations, anyone can achieve stress free high quality recording – even in the quick fire, high-pressure environment of a boardroom summit.
Calendar search function makes finding files easy
Audio files saved on the recorder can be automatically managed via date, with a calendar-like display provided for easier access. Of course the ability to be able to search for files is one of the key attractions of a digital voice recorder.
Noise cancellation for clear audio playback
This recorder has an integral noise cancellation function that powerfully reduces unwanted ambient sounds such as air conditioner or projector fan noise, thereby facilitating clarity when it comes to playback. This function proves especially effective when playing back the likes of a recorded meeting or business presentation.
Choice of MP3 and WMA recording formats
The WS-811 recorder employs the popular MP3 and high quality WMA recording formats. The latter cleverly balances high quality sound with a high compression ratio, so users get plenty of recording capacity and crystal clear audio with it. A large front mounted speaker provides the superb clarity of playback associated with Olympus.

Large, clear display and easy activation
The sophisticated WS-811 belies its entry-level status in the looks department, being an incredibly slender 14.8mm in depth yet featuring a large and legible 1.43-inch LCD display with LED backlight.
For the ultimate in convenience navigation is via one large central button. With voice activated recording featuring as standard, a dedicated record button is provided for manual activation. Generally controls are large, obvious and user friendly, allowing you freedom to concentrate on what’s being said instead of fiddling with controls during that all important business pitch.
Long battery life
Additional benefits include longer battery life thanks to low power consumption, plus the convenience of power coming courtesy of just one alkaline AAA battery. So this is one device that truly won't leave you lost for words.
Lightweight and portable
The WS-811 measures a compact and diminutive 100x40x14.8mm and won't weigh heavy on your pocket, purse, or wallet for that matter. In short it's a simple yet complete solution for high quality stereo digital recording and playback.

They key thing to note here is that it is a 'voice recorder'. If you want to record excellent reproductions of musical instruments, you may want to consider the Olympus LS series instead. However, where voice is concerned, this unit does have a lot of advantages. Do not let my last statement put you off this device.
For example, the unit is very quick to start up, and is ready for recording in less than a second, and some of the features for playback, including noise reduction and a voice balancer (which normalises the volume of multiple speakers in a recording) is something you will not find on a sound recorder such as the LS 14, neither is the facility to skip segments of the file where there is no voice, increase or decrease playback speed, or use voice activation to automatically start or pause a recording, meaning that the end files will be free of large gaps where nobody is speaking.
The microphone gain, sensitivity, and recording format can all be changed, you can also turn noise filters or low frequency filters on or off, or manually set the recording level for a really clear recording.
This unit also has a nice filing system, and you can browse your recordings by calendar, making finding the recording you want out of a huge number of files so much easier.
Possibly one of the best features of this recorder, which has possibly been understated in the advertising, is the use of the stereo microphones with the zoom mic feature.
With zoom mic, you can narrow down the angle at which the recording is made. Obviously, there will be no mechanical change in the microphones, so what the unit is doing when you 'zoom in', is giving you a file which only contains noise which can clearly be heard in front of both microphones. Fully zoomed in, you could happily record a lecturer at some distance, cutting out a lot of the noise to either side.
This function works really nicely, because of the envelope of each microphone, and the angle that they are at.
On the flip side to zooming in, you can zoom right out, and have a very good stereo picture of all of the sound in front of the device, what seems to me to be a full 180 degrees field. Perfect for recording multiple voices in a small room, and making individual voices so easy to pick out.
The unit is nice and small, it has a built in USB plug which slides out, meaning you don't have to worry about not having cables on you, it seems sturdy, the menus are simple and easy to navigate. There is a built in MP3 player, and FM radio, nice additional features, and with the expansion card slot for micro SD, you could record literally thousands of hours of notes.
Really impressed with this unit.
However, when it comes to listening to the recordings I found it time consuming to figure out how to put them in order etc. Also, the screen is grey and not easy to view in low light (I used this for making notes on sites I work at).
I think that for this money the case should be metallic rather than a kind of cheap plastic.
Good to have a usb connector fitted on a slider. In the end though, I find my iPhone 5 much better to access the material and upload.
And, it's so easy to find!!
I have not gone too in-depth into the instructions but will read up on those soon, however on using it briefly it really does the business and does not sound tinny. Bonus of the recording level and scene recording system it is worth its weight in price.
It can use both rechargeable and standard batteries (it even asks you to state which you have installed!) so is versatile.
Would have been nice to have a micro SD included but hey, not a problem in obtaining one I suppose.
UPDATE - May 29th...
As someone asked on Voice Activation but deleted their question I'll confirm here that it does have this facility. It also has Voice only activation whereby it can be set to record but if nobody speaks it will not record, but soon as you talk it records only what you say.
I asked Olympus if I could make a recording using this method before purchasing and they confirmed that it would be ideal.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem,I might have to talk to Olympus.
Apart from that it seems a very simple and unlike some recorders it reacts very quickly to the controls,I am suprised that one of your reviewers had problems with the erase, the erase button has a lower profile than the others and like all the erase facilities on recorders it gives you an option before you take that final step in this case erase or cancel.
I think the handbook could have given a bit more detail about the divide facility but it is not too difficult to figure out.
A minor niggle - we couldn't get the date format into DD MM YYYY as per the instructions. Olympus say there's no firmware fix as yet for this problem. They took 3 days to reply with that info so the support's not too great.
The user interface is a bit quirky and some of the menu setup default values aren't that useful so you should check and change those you need to.
