It's not only sports fans who appreciate rugged cameras and the Olympus Tough TG-4 flagship will resonate with anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors and wants to capture their experiences in high quality, in any environment, without worrying about the light or the state of equipment. The TG-4 is a powerful all-rounder but its most impressive single feature is the super-bright 25-100 mm lens with a 1:2.0 maximum aperture at wide zoom settings. This allows it to capture spectacular, colourful, low-noise shots in light-starved environments where fast shutter speeds and low ISO settings are indispensable. For example, at 15 metres underwater, where the TG-4 operates successfully without an underwater housing - or even an extra light. Divers will also appreciate the underwater HDR feature, the built-in manometer, the glove-friendly and customisable mode dial and four different macro settings. Other highlights include Live Composite, RAW file support and AF area, which allows you shift the focus within the frame.

Tough TG-4 - For most extreme experiences
No compromises on image quality, that's the goal for my sailing trips or when enjoying spectacular landscapes from the top of a mountain. Waterproof up to a water pressure equivalent of 15 m depth, freezeproof down to -10 degree Celsius, I can depend on my TG-4 for breathtaking pictures even under the most extreme conditions. And if dropped, it’s shockproof from heights of up to 2.1 m and also crushproof up to 100 kg, so in the rough and tumble of being on the move, the Tough TG-4 has got what it takes to capture my active lifestyle.
Whether you’re going for coral reefs, wrecks or the marine life: with the Tough TG-4 at the ready, you have a waterproof digital camera that performs to the highest level - even in the depths of the ocean. Featuring a super-bright maximum aperture of 1:2.0, the high-speed lens delivers breathtaking shots of your diving or snorkelling adventures, with colours and bright seascapes.
The TG-4 is ready for any outdoor challenge: rugged mountain terrain in sub-zero temperatures, heavy rain-showers, snow and sand storms, dark and rough forests. The ingenious Olympus seal system means the TG-4 functions in the most extreme conditions – wherever you go.
Breathtaking nature shots
The Tough TG-4 has the power to capture everything nature has to offer. Use any one of the four macro shooting modes, e.g. the focus stacking mode, to express your creativity. Get super close to insects, flowers, snowflakes, and capture them in clear, microscopic style.
Get a wider view of the world
When you’re in the middle of nature, you don’t always have the chance to set the scene. But with the TG-4’s 4x wide optical zoom, you don’t need to. Combined with high-speed autofocus, it lets you zoom from 25 to 100 mm (35 mm camera equivalent) and capture amazingly clear shots from a distance. Or zoom out for a broader picture of nature’s spectacularly wide vistas.
Shoot and share instantly
It’s easier than ever to share your adventures. Thanks to the TG-4’s built-in Wi-Fi and OI.Share capability. No matter where you are, wirelessly transfer photos to your smartphone or tablet. Or use your mobile device as a remote control for the TG-4’s settings and shooting. Enjoy fast, accurate tracking of your adventures with the TG-4’s next-generation GPS. Add GPS data to your photos when sharing, by installing the OI.Track app on your smartphone.
Expand your Tough-ness
With the TG-4, you also have an entire system of accessories ready to make your adventures even better. An underwater housing, LED Light Guide, Fisheye or Tele Converter, various carrying cases, Underwater Wide Converter and Flashes. Name the game and enjoy a world of creative options wherever your expeditions take you.

Photos look stunning and the macro is just amazing without any additional lenses. (Examples Attached)
I really like the WIFI function which allows you to offload the photos between dives without opening up the housing, some will appreciate this.
As an dive camera it really need to be accompanied with a strobe as the Ikelite housing lens partially covers the in-built flash, so you only get 50% image lit (which actually makes for an interesting and atmospheric photo), but a separate strobe really brings out the best and avoids backscatter.
Plus points: Accurate and quick auto-focussing; good colour balance when set to underwater mode; good and quick WiFi connectivity to download photos to a tablet or smartphone so you don't have to peer at a small screen; peace of mind that if you get a minor leak in the PT-056 housing (which hasn't happened to me) the camera itself is still waterproof.
Minus points: No lens cap; macro not great; zoom lever too fiddly; not possible to set the flash to default off when in underwater mode if you use a lamp for lighting as I do – you have to change the flash setting manually every time you switch on (a nuisance requiring 3 button clicks, but I've got used to it.)
I plan to buy the underwater housing so I can use the camera while diving deeper as I have found it to be far more detailed than the Go Pro for this purpose especially when taking photos and not videos. I have not tried the video feature on this camera yet, but everything I have tried does work very well.
The only other issue I have is that the charging lead is not a standard USB type. It looks very similar to a mini USB but it is not. This means the potential to forget to take this special lead with you on a trip and not being able to charge your camera. Poor design in my view. If it can't be a USB lead, I would rather have to take a charger unit away with me as I am likely to remember to take it. (I take several other chargers with me after all.) That option though costs £52 extra. Amazon have agreed to take this camera back - excellent service as usual.
The macro capabilities of the TGs is remarkable, that's my main reason for buying. In microscope mode you can get seriously close, so close that light can be an issue, there's an attachment for that. The focus stacking takes macro another step further, best with a tripod but with good bracing against a tree or the ground handheld can be well worth trying.
It's a solid camera but easily tucked in a pocket. The panorama mode is slightly lack lustre, not as good as iPhone but usable. Image quality is typical for a small sensor camera, perfect for web use and small prints but even with RAW you won't get a double page spread published....does that matter, not really.
So, why 4 stars and not five....I think the image quality could be better and probably will be in the TG5.
It is easy to set up, and use, the software which is supplied on a dvd is an excellent accompaniment for someone like me who is not normally very good at photography.
The controls are easy to understand and use and the results so far while practising are really very good, in fact better than any I have taken before with other cameras.
I consider myself a novice with photography so an easy camera with pleasing results fits the bill, I bought a "Tough" camera not for underwater but because I am clumsy and will drop it more than once.
I had mine on a belt loop whilst swimming in a lake and, whilst fumbling around for the camera in choppy water, inadvertently flicked a port open for the merest of seconds. Result; camera trashed. My fault, not theirs, but it is fairly easy to flip the ports open by mistake.
Takes good clear shots though. I will get another.
