Colour Name: Silver
The Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-830: Tough with a capital ‘T', this outdoor compact is taking all-weather picture taking to new depths - and new heights
Waterproof to 10 m, shockproof to 2.1 m, freezeproof to -10°C and crushproof to 100 kg.
Worry about your subject, not your camera. That's the peace of mind provided by Olympus's affordable and virtually indestructible TOUGH model, the 16 megapixel TG-830; a hard-as-nails contender that is sensitive when it counts; namely in delivering optimum picture quality.
The rock solid construction protects against drops and scrapes in being shockproof (against drops from 2.1 metres), as well as being freezeproof (to -10°C), crushproof (against weights of 100kg) and naturally for an Olympus TOUGH, waterproof, to a depth of 10 metres no less. In addition, an optional underwater housing is available that keeps your camera pressure-proof down to 45m deep, whilst an Advanced Underwater White Balance delivers the best natural colours in all underwater lighting scenarios.
So whether you find yourself on the slopes of an alpine mountain or exploring the depths of a tropical lagoon, the TG-830 is a must for stress free photography and achieving pictures impossible with any non TOUGH-ened device.
And if that wasn't enough, the TG-830 is as much geared towards shooting video as it is still photos. There is the choice of recording fast moving action in the Full HD 1080/30p format, or in 1080/60i; ideal for extracting still images on a PC.
Alternatively, as an exclusive feature of the TG-830, Multi Recording can be used to capture Full HD movies and 16-Megapixel photos at the same time - or record in 120fps (HD) or 240fps high-speed movie mode for dramatic slow-motion playback of action scenes. Whatever the format, GPS and e.compass automatically register where your films and photos were taken, so you can easily store and review them by location.
Like the TG-2, the TG-830 retrieves information on more than 700,000 landmarks in 180 countries and even records the direction in which the camera was pointing at the time. It's as remarkable as it is sturdy.
Plus 10x with super resolution zoom for sharp detail at a distance.
16-megapixel back-lit sensor for high sensitivity plus wide angle zoom
This heavy-duty contender has a sensitive side too. Included as standard with the TG-830 are Olympus's iHS technologies (intelligence, High Sensitivity and High Speed) - in the form of both a 16 megapixel low noise, high sensitivity back-lit ‘BSI' sensor plus a TruePic VI image processor - to ensure you get the shots you want whatever the shooting conditions. Added to this is a 5x wide optical zoom lens sporting a focal range that extends between a wide-angle 28mm and 140mm (f/3.9-5.9) in 35mm film terms.
Deploy the Super-resolution Zoom and there is the ability to extend this range to an equivalent of 10x on the TG-830 with virtually no loss in picture quality.
Dramatic image quality formerly unfeasible in its class
Olympus is globally renowned for its optical engineering and the lens incorporated into the TOUGH TG-830 is certainly world class. Combine this with its powerful TruePic VI image processor and 16-megapixel low noise, high sensitivity CMOS sensor and it ensures the Olympus TOUGH TG-830 is capable of delivering pictures previously unattainable with an outdoors camera in this price bracket.
Make light work of dim shooting conditions.

1080/30p or 1080/60i Full HD movie capability
In the TG-830's Full HD movie mode the camera captures video using the advanced Motion JPEG movie compression format at a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels for excellent quality video with sound; in fact it's the best moving image quality currently available on compact cameras.
3-inch HyperCrystal III 460,000 dots resolution display
To enable a crystal clear view of all those critters on the ocean floor, the TG-830 packs a high quality HyperCrystal III screen with a wide angle of view - whether composing shots or reviewing them.
Being 3-inches in size and offering a high 460k-dot resolution, whatever the weather or no matter how adverse the conditions, there is little chance of missing the moment with the TOUGH TG-830.
FlashAir™ compatible for transferring and sharing images
Everybody wants a device that is wireless these days. Fortunately the TG-830 is bang up to date through being FlashAir™ compatible. Users can connect to their cloud or social network using their smartphone interface with the use of an optional FlashAir™ memory card.
There are also free iOS and Android software downloads for editing and sharing images in social networks via smartphone or tablet PC. Eye-Fi card and SDHC and SDXC card compatibility is further provided.
11 Magic Filters for turning the everyday into the extraordinary
Specifically designed to expand the creative potential of digital photography, this impressive function of the TG-830 utilises in-camera image processing technology to effortlessly transform the everyday into extraordinary scenes. Simple to operate, the filters allow users to create entirely new worlds with their images. What's more, most of the filters can be used when recording video (except Fragmented and Sparkle) as well as shooting stills.
Users can choose from Punk, Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fish-Eye, Soft Focus, Sparkle, Watercolour, Reflection, Miniature, Fragmented or Dramatic.
- Punk: Pose like Sid and Nancy and have your world turned dayglo pink, with this fun feature that transforms your photos into crudely photocopied fanzine style images, but in a good way.
- Pop Art: In the tradition of Andy Warhol, this effect enhances colours, making them stronger and more vivid. It creates high-impact pictures that express the happy, light-hearted feeling of the pop art style.
- Fish-Eye: With its distorted 180-degree perspective, this filter reproduces the dramatic effect of a fish-eye lens. It lends a new perspective to the whole scene with a "round" effect.
- Pin Hole: For an ethereal feel, Pin Hole reduces the peripheral brightness of images like an image seen through a pinhole. Added to this is a unique colour tone that results in a style that has an air of secrecy or portrays the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space.
- Soft Focus: Give your portraits that romantic otherworldly look beloved of wedding photographers.
- Sparkle (photos only): A Magic Filter that truly imparts a sprinkling of fairy dust, adding twinkling reflections to shiny objects.
- Watercolour: With this option pictures are transformed into a watercolour painting framed by soft light.
- Reflection: A simulation of a magical horizontal reflection of your subject: for example as if it or they were standing next to perfectly still water.
- Miniature: Capture your subject and present them as if on a toy town scale.
- Fragmented (photos only): Lends photographs a tiled, collage-like effect, as if an image has been cut up and reassembled.
- Dramatic: Enhances detail, for example in shadows and skies, to provide greater impact and drama to the everyday.
Pinpoint your location and orientation, wherever you are.
Built in GPS and electronic compass
The TG-830 is equipped to save your location as data stored with every shot you take, whilst it can even record your route when you're not taking pictures
The proof is in the proofing
Worry-free picture taking, that's the pitch for the TG-830; the camera is crushproof and able to withstand a force of 100kg, is waterproof to 10 metres, shockproofed against drops from 2.1 metres in height and freezeproof to minus 10°C.
The above is achieved, in part, thanks to a sliding double lock mechanism and metal body ensuring optimum protection for battery, card slots and ports, a hard glass lens barrier for extra tough lens protection, and water repellent scratch resistant double seal technology.
In a nutshell, everything about the design of this camera is focused around resilience to the outside elements.
Dual Image Stabilisation
Forget the shakes when taking images. Providing two-fold protection against blurring, this function is a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation - using a built-in gyro sensor and microprocessor to detect camera movement and mechanically adjusts the sensor accordingly - plus Digital Image Stabilisation, where the camera automatically increases ISO sensitivity to allow shorter shutter speeds. Both of these help to avoid image blur caused by camera shake or by fast-moving objects.
There's also a built-in flash to fall back on too, if required.
Flexibility… yet precision too
No matter what your subject, the 5x wide optical zoom, equivalent to 28-140mm in 35mm film terms, provides the scope for both precision and flexibility, while the 3-inch, high 460,000 dot resolution screen allows for accurate shot composition and crystal clear playback.
The TG-830 additionally incorporates all the comprehensive features you would expect to find on an Olympus digital camera.
These include a powerful TruePic VI image processing engine, Multi-Motion Movie IS (image stabilisation) for reduced blur when recording video, even while walking, plus HDR Backlight Adjustment for ideal exposure when shooting against the light.
Added to this is Advanced Face Detection Technology for perfect people pictures, Pet Detection, Beauty mode for masking unwanted blemishes, Intelligent Auto Mode (i-Auto), AF Tracking, Shadow Adjustment Technology, ISO100 to ISO6400 light sensitivity, plus in-camera panorama for a quick and easy panorama shot. As if that wasn't enough, scene mode settings are included to provide an optimum performance in specific conditions and include Landscape, Night Scene and Underwater Snapshot plus Underwater Macro options.
Intelligent Automatic Mode (i-Auto)
Taking a great picture with the TG-830 is as easy as pointing and shooting, thanks to i-Auto mode. This compares common scenes and subjects with on board settings and automatically selects the most appropriate to deliver stunning results that optimize the impact of said subject.

Anyway, the battery is in and it charges well so here's the review
Thanks to a couple of very hot days days and being a friend of a friend at a barbecue with some people who wonderfully had an outside pool (!), I was finally able to test the waterproof ability this weekend
There are four specific water functions, one is macro based (close up) two are specific (underwater action and underwater landscape) and one is a generic pool shot. This is the one I used and it was perfect for ridiculous selfies underwater. As the day got a little bit darker then the flash really does come into it's own and works really well
As it is shockproof as well, you can rest assured that dropping it in the pool and letting it sink won't do any damage at all, in fact you can set the timer, sink it onto the floor and swim down for a cool shot...
The screen could be a little brighter when using underwater, even using goggles it was quite dark and when the light hits it at a certain angle it becomes completely silver and reflective making it hard at times to get a proper shot.
Filming underwater works very well as well, there are perhaps too many filming functions for my liking in what is supposed to be a camera as opposed to a camcorder but then you don't have to use them all
Using the camera above water it is also shockproof and ice proof, just what I needed during a ramble down Cornwall way during a British summer.Read more ›
I have to say I am pretty impressed!
The menu are simple and easy to use (without the need to fully read to manual provided on a CD)
the camera feels sturdy and well built, with the buttons actually smartly placed in my opinion
I have tested the toughness to a certain extend... the camera can totally be dropped in fresh snow, spilled a drink on and be handled by kids without fear of fatal damage
but best of all, it does take really nice shots, with correct exposure with the help of the scene modes, good shutter speed, not bad in low light either, sharp focus and it even records quite decent short movies
I am in no way an expert, but I have a DSLR that I never take anywhere because it's too bulky and fragile, despite the wonderful pictures it can produces.
This is the camera to capture the snowball fights, the muddy bike rides and the trips to the beach, and it ticks all the boxes!
Image quality is generally good. (I've added an underwater photo to the gallery as a sample) and the fun modes are impressive too.
Battery life is pretty good.
A nice balance of quality and value for money.
The rugged and waterproof ability of this camera is superb. It was in the sea and in the sand and is very confidence inspiring with a floaty wrist strap.
Just pour water over it to clean the sand off and its good to chuck in your bag.
The only thing to watch out for is dirt/sand getting in the compartment seals. If you use a soft bristle tooth brush to make sure they are clean everytime you close it back up you wont go wrong.
I have a Canon s100 which takes better photos but you simply can't take that camera to places like you can the Olympus.
Bottom line is....... This starts up fast, takes stills and video , Has fun/creative modes which are very useable and after all they say the best camera is the one you have with you.
Easy to carry due to its size and can take a very good picture, its tough, and it can take great full HD quality recording. Comes with strap, (handy but can be tricky when you are case shopping!) Has no case, card, or spare battery which is a shame. Usual I guess though!
The camera is easy enough to start with without having to do to much reading, it has a lot of options but is fairly intuitive for the main ones I would say, and easy to set on an auto setting.
The buttons press easily although the record button is a bit more fiddly, but still fine, and I guess I am learning still the pressure required on it.
Quality of pictures outside and inside is as I hoped, very clear but I think it is better on outside pictures - like most cameras. (skin tones mainly struggle inside)
Camera is wonderful for getting high quality film so easily, playback is reasonable, although watch what computer programme you use as first one we used made playback stutter which worried us till we tried another! Finding it tricky to find good playback clear of any glitches.
Love the fact photos can be taken during recording, and the camera deals mostly well with motion in photos.
Love the magic filters option, of course some seem better than others and may be suited to different things, its fun though and the dramatic setting and mirror image settings are my favourite, the soft and watercolour settings seem a bit weak.
Haven't figured the setting to take a pic of yourself yet, found it but woulnd't play ball, need to look in the manual at that.Read more ›
