Description

The µ [mju:] TOUGH-6000 is perfect for those really wanting to take things to the limit: waterproof to 3m**, shockproofed against falls of a height up to 1.5m***, and freezeproof down to temperatures as low as -10°C, it can take a veritable beating and still returns excellent results.

The µ [mju:] TOUGH-6000 inherits the versatile 3.6x wide optical zoom which was first seen in the µ TOUGH series’ EISA Award winning µ 1030 SW predecessor model.

The lens offers a focal range that starts at just 28mm for fantastic group photos and close-range architectural motifs, extending to 102mm for bringing distant subjects in close.

Dual Image Stabilisation joins the image-enhancing features of the µ [mju:] TOUGH-6000. It ensures that photos impress with their blur-free fidelity even when the shooting environment means some camera shake is inevitable.

Besides an intuitive on-screen menu that can be displayed on the 6.9cm/2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD in up to 39 languages, the camera features an additional innovative approach to controlling the camera. The Tap Control mode gives users fast access to a range of settings simply by tapping the camera body – which also means that adjustments can easily be made even when wearing ski gloves.

Being built for tough action doesn’t mean the µ [mju:] TOUGH-6000 skimps on image quality. Boasting 10MP, it is capable of recognising up to 16 faces thanks to Advanced Face Detection Technology guaranteeing that human subjects are always perfectly focused and exposed. This capable camera further has a handy Smile Shot feature that enables it to take the picture as soon as the person smiles.

Meanwhile, Shadow Adjustment Technology assures that optimal contrast levels are attained across the entire image. Shooting ease is also enhanced through the inclusion of Intelligent Auto Mode, which identifies the scene being framed and automatically adjusts camera settings to one of five commonly used scenes.

The resilient µ [mju:] TOUGH-6000 is a natural choice for anyone looking for a camera that can keep up with an active lifestyle.

TAP CONTROL MODE FOR EASY FUNCTION SELECTION
This is a unique interface that lets users access a range of camera functions by simply tapping on the camera body. Quick View mode, Scroll Playback Pictures and a user-defined function (Flash or SAT) can all be accessed by tapping at particular points of the camera.

HYPERCRYSTAL LCD FOR ENHANCED BRIGHTNESS
A high-grade, fully-transmissive technology used in LCDs, which employs an additional layer at the bottom of the LCD to reflect light from external light sources. This enhances the brightness of the LCD, so even in direct sunlight images are displayed sharply and improved contrast compared to that of conventional displays. Also, it provides for particularly wide viewing angles without glare or shadow, so images can be framed from a variety of angles and viewed by several people at once.

INTELLIGENT AUTO MODE FOR PERFECT PHOTOS
This "intelligent" type of AUTO mode uses Face Detection Technology to allow the camera to detect the five most commonly used scenes automatically. It enables the capture of perfect photos without any need for manual settings.

MICROSD COMPATIBILITY
A special attachment comes bundled with this camera which provides for microSD card compatibility in addition to being able to use xD-Picture Cards.

SHADOW ADJUSTMENT TECHNOLOGY FOR IMPROVED EXPOSURES
A technology designed to improve exposure for pictures with dark areas. Using a sensor that works much like the human eye, dark parts of a composition (e.g. a shadow under a tree) are identified and the camera then adjusts the exposure settings accordingly for those areas. The result is a more realistic and detailed picture.

POWERFUL DUAL IS FEATURE MINIMISES BLUR AND MAKES SHOOTING IN EXTREME "TOUGH" CONDITIONS A SNAP
Image stabilisation used to be extremely difficult to combine with shockproof performance. However, Olympus succeeded in incorporating a CCD shift image stabilisation mechanism without sacrificing the body size. The result is Dual IS, which reduce blurring caused by camera shake and subject movement and makes it easier to take pictures in extreme "tough" conditions.

Main selling point: toughness. I've had this camera about a month now, and it seems to cope with everything my one year old can throw at it. I'd call that a recomendation. It really does feel robust and well made. It would be worth getting scratch covers for the screen though, I think. This camera was a replacement for a Mju mini, which was neater and easier to use. On the whole, pictures come out well, with nice colours, focus and clarity. Things do tend to get a bit grainy in low light, but they would. Outdoor pictures, including sunsets, are very good indeed. The wide angle lens is great for landscapes and indoors, and zooms in nicely for portaits etc. Subjects close to the flash do tend go get washed out, though. Video works well, but the zoom is unavailable while filming. Shutter lag is OK, better than the mju Mini, but still annoying. It's easy to use, with sensibly laid out controls, and the screen is good in all but the very brightest light. Overall, you could certainly get a better camera for the money, but none that are this well screwed together or gravy-proof.

I took this camera on holiday knowing it was going to be a wild one!!! It was!! And this camera lived a hard life and can up trumps everytime.
My low light shots were excellent and didn't suffer from any of the issues the previous review is complaining about. Mine we all in very dark night clubs and outdoors and I'm very happy with the results. My shots of the fire eater/hell raisers are excellent on the fireworks setting!
5* for me and well worth the investment as it was dropped more than once and lived on the beach too!!!

Well designed, quality feel, I wanted a camera I could take anywhere. It's compact, copes with being in pockets with dust and coins and on the dusty floor of a car. I bought it for the beach - but its great also for taking pictures in the rain/drizzle and not worrying about it getting wet. The reviewers are right- this camera is at its best in good light. It creates harsher high contrast pictures in low light with the flash - e.g. indoors - but great quality in natural light. Video function also is excellent. If you want a better picture in low light - you probably don't want any of the waterproof cameras from what I can see most aren't as great in low light in reviews. if you want something easy to carry, copes with life, and gives the flexibility for beach/swimming use - then this is a great choice. And it looks good too

Simple. Buy the old model(Olympus Stylus 850SW 8MP). I've used both the old model and this one now quite extensively and this new model is significantly worse in many areas. It is just blisteringly slow at doing anything. Start taking the photo about an hour in advance before you've told the kids to smile because they'll get sore cheek bones otherwise.
Secondly, and most frustratingly, it appears Olympus have gone out of their way to ignore all their previous research into photography at low light, because every photo in low light comes out very grainy. Even using the so called "night time" scenic mode, the picture quality is still woeful. It's hopeless once the sun goes down basically.
Everything else though is great... just as the old Olympus Stylus 850SW was. Take my word, don't buy it. Save a few coppers and get the old one - quicker and superior picture quality plus cheaper. The only significant upgrades are the wide angle lens and the tap function (oh, and a sexy new casing), but you can live without wide angle by taking a step back, and the tap function is only really any use if you're on the slopes with your gloves on and it's very cold.

Buy the Olympus Stylus 850SW or the Olympus Stylus 1030SW instead. Way better.

I bought this camera a few weeks ago mainly for its waterproof and drop proof capabilities as i have been known to be accident prone when it comes to cameras.

I couldn't believe the terrible quality of the pictures in low light. I thought there was a problem with the camera at 1st and requested a replacement only to find there was not a fault. The photos in low light that needs a flash are blurred and have a large amount of 'noise'. I took it off Auto and played around with the ISO on Manuel and even spoke to Olympus customer service and they agreed that it wasn't good.

Fortunately I bought this through Amazon and I received a full refund. Don't buy this camera!

I bought this camera because my brother has the earlier model and loves it. The waterproof aspect was the real selling point and I was prepared for slightly lower picture quality than I might get with another camera of the same price.
The photos were terrible, most were completely out of focus with bad colour balance (most were very overexposed) and I was very disappointed. luckily I could return the camera to Amazon and got a refund.
You're paying for the waterproof and drop-proof capabilities, at the expense of good photos.
